Welcome to a new year
It is my pleasure to welcome all Haywood County students to
the 2008-2009 school year. As interim director, I realize the
great responsibility our school system has in shaping the
lives of the children. We hope all students have settled into
their classrooms and are looking forward to a great school
year.
As you may have heard, our system made AYP during the last
school year, and we are proud of the administrators, teachers
and students for their hard work. This is an ongoing challenge
for us all, and you should know that our administrators are
ever vigilant in doing what needs to be done to continue this
trend in our schools. I have visited all the schools this
year and always enjoy seeing all the children at work and at
play. It’s part of our job to provide not only academic
training in our schools but also lessons in good behavior,
social interaction, the arts, music, and athletics. Each
school is providing healthy food choices and exercise
opportunities for the students to promote a healthier
lifestyle and opportunities to learn through hands-on
experiences in many different areas. We want our schools to be
a well-rounded learning experience for all children.
So, to all the students and their families, let’s join
together for another year to give our children an exceptional
educational experience. It’s the most important thing we can
do for them and for our community.

Pop Tops for St. Jude

East Side librarian Sandra Angotti
has the entire school participating in a community service project
that is both fun and rewarding. “Pop Tops for St. Jude,” a
fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Cancer and Research Hospital in
Memphis, has everyone at East Side collecting pop tops for
recycling and cash.
Mrs. Angotti started the project
last year, and the children are racing to see what class can fill
the most gallon jugs by mid-April so they can win a prize. The
prize? A trip to St. Jude where the students will tour the
facility and present their check, a ride on the downtown trolley
in Memphis, a stopover at the Peabody Hotel where they will see
the famous Peabody Ducks, and lunch. Leading in the race now is
Mrs. Moria Hart’s class who has already collected 21 gallons just
this year, adding to the 19 they collected last year.
This project is in memory of Marla
Angotti, daughter of Sandra and P. J. Angotti, who died of cancer
several years ago. Anyone wishing to donate pop tops to the project
can call East Side at 772-1233.
Expanding the reach …

East Side third-grade teachers recently learned some new
techniques for reading instruction when Bonnie Freeman and Jill
Slack from the “Expanding the Reach” program spent came to the
school to conduct seminars. This program is funded by the U. S.
Department of Education and helps schools to meet the requirements
of the federal No Child Left Behind Act. Some of the information
Freeman and Slack provided were ways to improve assessing
children’s reading abilities.
East Side students honor Black
History Month

In honor of Black History Month,
students in Ms. Kellie Davis’s third-grade class at East Side
Elementary made some very special presentations. Students were
able to choose a famous African-American and do research on that
person.
They began by checking out a book
from the school library, on which each student completed a book
report. Next, the class spent a few hours in the computer lab
doing research and finding pictures. Then, students created a
poster board that displayed the life and achievements of their
famous African-American. Students also came up with a prop that
corresponded to their person.
The presentations included an oral
book report, as well as a display of the poster board and prop.
Terra Nova Night

Terra Nova Night was held at East
Side on February 27 giving parents who came the opportunity to
learn more information about the test that will be held in April.
A light dinner was served to all who attended, and then parents
rotated in groups to learn about all four subject areas on the
test. Teachers provided the training for parents. Technology was
used to show parents what was available for use at home through
web-based programs. Parents also received materials to take home.
