A lesson on “Giving”

East Side Elementary third-grade teacher Linda
Norvell decided to enhance her lessons on “giving,” by having her
class plan and conduct an Easter Egg Hunt for some of the school’s
special education students in the classes of Mrs. Andrea Gibbs and
Ms. Laura Jones. According to Mrs. Norvell, the event proved to be
a blessing for both sets of students - the “givers” and the
“receivers.”
East students compete in 4H speech contest
Eleven East Side Elementary students recently
competed in a 4H speech contest. The topic for the speeches was
“My Favorite Person.” Most students selected family members as
their subject, while a few spoke about Hannah Montana, Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr., and a teacher.
Blue Ribbon first-place winners were Mary Catherine
Currie, Madison Carvin, and Alecia Johnson. Red Ribbon
second-place winners were Jacob Lovelace, Kendall Goodrich, Amber
Vales, Marisol Gavin, and Jessica Santos. Winning White Ribbons
for third place were Ariel Oldham, Courtney Beasley, and Sky
Navarro.
East Side students study Tennessee history

Miss Amelia Lovett's students are studying the
products and reso
urces of Tennessee as part of a Tennessee History
unit. The teacher and students made sugar cookies in the shape of
the state and decorated them accordingly to what is produced or
found in each of three main parts of Tennessee West, Middle, and
East.

Each piece of food represents the following: the
miniature marshmallows represent cotton that is grown in
Tennessee, the chocolate chips represent coal that is mined in
Tennessee, the peanuts represent the peanuts that are grown in
Tennessee, the pretzel sticks represent tobacco, trees, and wheat
that are grown in Tennessee and the Goldfish crackers represent
fish that are found in lakes, rivers, and ponds in Tennessee.

Miranda Jones Teacher of the Year

East Side Elementary School’s Teacher of the Year
is Miranda Jones. She teaches all subjects in fourth grade and has
been a teacher for 20 years. Mrs. Jones holds a B.S.E. degree in
vocational rehabilitation and special education from the
University of Memphis, and earned her elementary education
teaching certification from Freed-Hardeman University. She has
worked in the Haywood County School system since 1984. She is a
Mentor Teacher for New Teachers at East Side for the second year
and is a Junior Achievement Student Teacher Advisor. She was also
selected as Teacher of the Year at East Side in the 2005-2006
school year.
