Brief Notes
Doris Battle, Editor

Welcome to a new year

It is my pleasure to welcome all Haywood County students to the 2008-2009 school year. As interim director, I realize the great responsibility our school system has in shaping the lives of the children. We hope all students have settled into their classrooms and are looking forward to a great school year.

As you may have heard, our system made AYP during the last school year, and we are proud of the administrators, teachers and students for their hard work. This is an ongoing challenge for us all, and you should know that our administrators are ever vigilant in doing what needs to be done to continue this trend in our schools.

I have visited all the schools this year and always enjoy seeing all the children at work and at play. It’s part of our job to provide not only academic training in our schools but also lessons in good behavior, social interaction, the arts, music, and athletics. Each school is providing healthy food choices and exercise opportunities for the students to promote a healthier lifestyle and opportunities to learn through hands-on experiences in many different areas. We want our schools to be a well-rounded learning experience for all children.

So, to all the students and their families, let’s join together for another year to give our children an exceptional educational experience. It’s the most important thing we can do for them and for our community.

A lesson on “Giving”

East Side Elementary third-grade teacher Linda Norvell decided to enhance her lessons on “giving,” by having her class plan and conduct an Easter Egg Hunt for some of the school’s special education students in the classes of Mrs. Andrea Gibbs and Ms. Laura Jones. According to Mrs. Norvell, the event proved to be a blessing for both sets of students - the “givers” and the “receivers.”

East students compete in 4H speech contest

Eleven East Side Elementary students recently competed in a 4H speech contest. The topic for the speeches was “My Favorite Person.” Most students selected family members as their subject, while a few spoke about Hannah Montana, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and a teacher.

Blue Ribbon first-place winners were Mary Catherine Currie, Madison Carvin, and Alecia Johnson. Red Ribbon second-place winners were Jacob Lovelace, Kendall Goodrich, Amber Vales, Marisol Gavin, and Jessica Santos. Winning White Ribbons for third place were Ariel Oldham, Courtney Beasley, and Sky Navarro.

East Side students study Tennessee history

Miss Amelia Lovett's students are studying the products and reso

urces of Tennessee as part of a Tennessee History unit. The teacher and students made sugar cookies in the shape of the state and decorated them accordingly to what is produced or found in each of three main parts of Tennessee West, Middle, and East.

Each piece of food represents the following: the miniature marshmallows represent cotton that is grown in Tennessee, the chocolate chips represent coal that is mined in Tennessee, the peanuts represent the peanuts that are grown in Tennessee, the pretzel sticks represent tobacco, trees, and wheat that are grown in Tennessee and the Goldfish crackers represent fish that are found in lakes, rivers, and ponds in Tennessee.

Miranda Jones Teacher of the Year

East Side Elementary School’s Teacher of the Year is Miranda Jones. She teaches all subjects in fourth grade and has been a teacher for 20 years. Mrs. Jones holds a B.S.E. degree in vocational rehabilitation and special education from the University of Memphis, and earned her elementary education teaching certification from Freed-Hardeman University.
