East Side shows “Fine Arts”
One could feel the slight air of sophistication in
the hallways of East Side Elementary School last Thursday
evening. The school held its first Fine Arts Program from 5:30
p.m. to 7 p.m. Parents were able to explore various
presentations of the school’s arts, dance and music with their
children.
Attendees could enjoy the sounds of guest harpist Amanda
Hamilton, view a showing of “Stomp!” or even make their own
beats and rhythms with frying pans and kitchen utensils. Between
snacking on finger food served by student volunteers, attendees
were also able view the artwork of students, make their own
artistic pieces with fruit and vegetables in place of brushes,
or listen to two students explain the lives of Vincent Van Gough
and Georgia O-Keefe while cleverly dressed as the artists’
paintings. There were also stations for creative writing and
storytelling.
The Fine Arts Program is just one of the school’s
events held throughout the year to encourage family
participation in their children’s education.
“We’re excited. We like to try different things,” East Side
Principal Tammie Canada said. “Our goal is to have a family
event once every month."

Heroes enjoy breakfast with East Side students

On March 11, Mrs. Joyce Sikes, cafeteria manager at
East Side hosted a “Heroes Breakfast” in honor of National
Breakfast Week.
Ms. Joyce invited several Haywood County heroes to a special
breakfast. After breakfast, each hero walked around the
cafeteria speaking with the children reminding them of the
importance of eating breakfast daily!
Super Hero Susie Powers (a.k.a. Allison Pyron), Director of Food
Service “flew” in to join the students at breakfast.

East Side Family Night a great success

East Side Elementary School was the place to be
Friday, February 20, for Family Movie Night. About 200 family
members gathered to watch Madagascar2 in East Side’s gym. “This
was East Side’s third and best movie night,” Principal Tammie
Canada said.

Mrs. Reid talks to students about her travels

Mrs. Elizabeth Reid visited the class of Dr. Amy
Harris at East Side as a reward for their good behavior! She
brought along a basket of souvenirs from her many travels to
more than 54 countries. Each student chose one souvenir and Mrs.
Reid explained the story behind each one. Example - Mrs. Reid
climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania on the continent of Africa.
There were no souvenir shops atop the mountain, so she chose a
rock from the top of the mountain as her souvenir! Mrs. Reid is
the grandmother of Mattie Ford, a student in Dr. Harris’ class,
and she is the wife of the Honorable Judge Lyle Reid.
Students learn to write a letter and about
geometry

The fifteen students in Mrs. Andrea Gibb's third-
and fourth-grade Comprehensive Development Classroom have been
busy learning the parts of a friendly letter and how to address
an envelope in language arts. In math, the students have spent
time learning a little about geometry. They even demonstrated
what they’ve learned!

Mrs. Darlene Young and Miss Mary Bufford are the
paraprofessionals who assist Mrs. Gibbs and the students in this
class.
Graphing can be fun!

Ms. Janet Grammer’s third graders at East Side
Elementary have enjoyed creating and interpreting various
graphs!

National Breakfast Week essay winners recognized

Mrs. Joyce Sikes, East Side cafeteria manager, held
an essay-writing contest in honor of National Breakfast Week.
There was a third-grade and a fourth-grade winner. The students
won coloring books for themselves and each one of their
classmates. They also received a lunch tote bag.
The morning of the Heroes Breakfast, each student
present at breakfast participated in a breakfast drawing. The
winner was a third grader! She won a bag filled with healthy
snacks and other goodies.
There to present the awards (from left)) were Mrs.
Mamie Watson, assistant cafeteria manager; Superhero Susie
Powers (a.k.a. Allison Pyron - Director of Food Services); East
Side Cafeteria Manager Mrs. Joyce Sikes; and Mrs. Sharon
Thornton, Haywood School Health Coordinator.
East Side students study cultures around the
world

Students in Leslie Essary’s third-grade class
recently completed a social studies lesson on cultures around
the world.

To make it more interesting, students were divided
into groups and each group was assigned a country. The teams
created a display and wrote a report featuring key items about
their country including, capitol, leader, imports and exports,
population, art, landmarks, a map of the country, foods, and fun
facts. The students compared the cultures and enjoyed eating
pound cake from France, citrus fruits from Australia, passion
fruit smoothies from Africa, sweet and sour chicken and fried
rice from China, and pizza from Italy.
