ES students excel in reading participation

Mrs. Peggy Jackson of the UT Extension office presented East Side
Principal Opal Hay
with a trophy in recognition of her students’ participation in
the Reading Wall of Fame for the 4th Six Weeks. ES students read
more books than any other school in the county that participated
in the program. Mrs. Hay gladly accepted and encouraged students
to keep on reading. In addition, Mrs. Jackson spoke with the
parents in the audience and gave them examples of ways to
strengthen reading skills using newspapers at home. She asked a
student in the audience to help her give a title for a sports
story that she read aloud. He used his main idea skills and gave
a great answer. She says his title was better than the one the
newspaper used and would really make her want to read the story.

East Siders raise money for Haiti

Kudos to ES students and staff for making our "Hip 4 Haiti" Jean
Day fundraiser a success on Friday, February 26!!! In order to
advertise the very important day, Ms. Hardin’s third-grade class
created posters with important information that would urge the
cause. The total donations equaled $430 for the Haiti Relief
Fund.
ES students enjoy “Back to the 80’s”

On Thursday, March 4, East Side students and staff took a field
trip to the Ann Marks Performing Arts Center to see the Haywood
High School Fine Arts Department perform the play “Back to the
80’s: A Totally Awesome Musical.” During the play, the students
enjoyed an interesting plot, great sets, and wonderful acting
and musical numbers. In addition, the students were overjoyed as
they rocked to the beats of the orchestra.
They particularly enjoyed the song “Man in the Mirror.” In this
photo, students pose proudly with one of the "totally awesome"
actors after the show.
African Americans honored during February

During the month of February, East Side students explored the
important contributions of African Americans in our world.
Classes participated in projects that included a creative
scrapbook of Maya Angelou's life, a patriotic poster explaining
the successes of Carol Moseley Brown, an interesting PowerPoint
presentation about the life and times of George Washington
Carver, an artistic expression of the music of BB King, a model
of a colorful freedom quilt used in the Underground Railroad,
and much more. In addition to helping students practice
comprehension and research skills, these projects helped our
students gain more knowledge about what African Americans have
contributed to our lives.
Students perform “magic” with their work

On Friday, March 5, first and second honor roll students
celebrated their achievements for the 4th Six Weeks with a visit
from a very friendly magician. ES students and staff were amazed
as he performed tricks and encouraged the students to continue
to work hard at their studies and to always have good character.
Congratulations to those students and keep up the “magical
work.”
Delta Sigma Theta joins East Side students

On Tuesday, March 9, Delta Sigma Theta joined East Side students
and staff for their morning meeting. On this day, they surprised
the students and presented them with brand new books for the
school library. Ms. Minnie Reed, the librarian, was especially
grateful. In addition, this community service organization
encouraged the students to keep on reading because their lives
will be better for it.
Coach Grant teaches motor skills in PE

Coach Grant is teaching hand and eye coordination and fine motor
skills using juggling in PE class at East Side Elementary. The
students are practicing with colorful sheer handkerchiefs and
enjoying every minute of it! Here a student is trying his best
to imitate Coach Grant as he models.

Mattie Ford scores big with speech

Congratulations to Mattie Ford, a fourth grader in Ms. Morrison’s
and Ms. Hart’s class. Mattie entered the Haywood County 4-H
Speech Contest. Her speech was about making healthy food
choices. She won first place at East Side, then she went on to
compete with other students in the county and won first place
again. Later, she went to the West Tennessee regional
competition and brought home second place. She is the daughter
of Martha Lyle and Bob Ford.
