Great participation in 5K walk/run

The East Side School and Coordinated School Health held their
second annual 5K walk/run on Saturday, April 25. The event was a
success with more than 70 participants. The day was beautiful
and many school-aged kids turned out to run or walk. East Side
student Chris Hafford designed the T-shirt for the event. Ms.
Linda Mann’s art class held the design competition.
Congratulations, Chris!

Ms. Miranda Jones’ class had the “Highest Attendence” and won a
“Picnic with the Prinicipal” and a traveling trophy for their
homeroom. The event is a fund-raiser in which all proceeds go to
make East Side a healthier school.

“Special thanks goes to Principal Tammie Canada and Assistant
Principal Yvette Blue for all their efforts,” said Sharon
Thornton, Haywood County Schools Coordinated School Health
Director.
East Side hosts Ag Day 2009

East Side Elementary administrators brought the
world of agriculture into the lives of their students when they
were hosts to the Second Annual Ag Day on April 30. Making this
possible was the University of Tennessee Agriculture Extension
Office under the leadership of Mr. Walter Battle.

Students learned about cotton and what it produces,
chickens and what they produce, how vegetables grow, cattle and
its many by-products, while enjoying a number of displays and
information sessions presented by UT personnel and volunteers.

Students visit Belle Meade Plantation

Miss Maria Hart’s fourth-grade class and Mrs. Abby
Hooper’s Prodigy class visited the Belle Meade Plantation in
Nashville. Students learned how people lived during the Frontier
era. Students visited cabins, a smokehouse, and the mansion.
Students learned how to keep away “bed bugs” by making a special
mixture of herbs in their very own Bed Bug Bag. They also
learned various ways to bring light into a room WITHOUT
electricity. They also learned how children kept themselves busy
WITHOUT television. The students enjoyed the learning experience
as well as the bus ride!
