Welcome to a new year
It is my pleasure to welcome all Haywood County students to
the 2008-2009 school year. As interim director, I realize the
great responsibility our school system has in shaping the
lives of the children. We hope all students have settled into
their classrooms and are looking forward to a great school
year.
As you may have heard, our system made AYP during the last
school year, and we are proud of the administrators, teachers
and students for their hard work. This is an ongoing challenge
for us all, and you should know that our administrators are
ever vigilant in doing what needs to be done to continue this
trend in our schools. I have visited all the schools this
year and always enjoy seeing all the children at work and at
play. It’s part of our job to provide not only academic
training in our schools but also lessons in good behavior,
social interaction, the arts, music, and athletics. Each
school is providing healthy food choices and exercise
opportunities for the students to promote a healthier
lifestyle and opportunities to learn through hands-on
experiences in many different areas. We want our schools to be
a well-rounded learning experience for all children.
So, to all the students and their families, let’s join
together for another year to give our children an exceptional
educational experience. It’s the most important thing we can
do for them and for our community.

Mismatch Day fun for students and faculty

East Side Elementary students enjoyed October’s annual “Book
Fair,” especially “Mismatch Day.” These students, along with
teacher Isadore Pesant and teacher assistant Allison Jones, were
having a good time posing in their costumes for the day – wearing
one of this and one of that to make up their outfits. From
Wednesday through Friday, librarian Sandra Angotti invited
students and parents to browse through the school library and
purchase books. Part of the proceeds from the sale will be used to
purchase more books and materials for the library.
Fall Fest brings crowd to East Side

It was a beautiful day in the neighborhood – the East Side
Elementary neighborhood that is
Saturday, October 14, when administrators, teachers, staff
members, students, and family members gathered for the school’s
second annual Fall Fest. Some enjoyed a traditional hayride, while
others participated in games, face-painting, the Fear Factor East
Side Style event, the Tug-of-War (parents vs. students), karaoke,
or pumpkin decorating. Festival goers also enjoyed a magician,
concessions and a balloon artist who made balloon animals.
Everyone had a great time, including these hoola-hoopers,
according to principal Tammie Canady. “We want to thank all the
local businesses that donated to our wonderful day,” Mrs. Canady
said. Among those businesses were E. W. James, Back Yard
Bar-Be-Cue, Wal-Mart, Save-A-Lot, The Treasure Chest, and Flowers
Galore and More.
Get Caught Reading a Good Book!

East Side teacher Chrystel Roach and her third-grade students
really outdid themselves when they created this scarecrow scene
that captured first place in the children’s division in the Fall
Fest Scarecrow Contest. She and her students proudly posed around
the realistic display titled, "Get Caught Reading a Good Book,”
making it hard to tell who was actually hay-filled.
Students make music with new teacher

Lynn Holt is beginning her career as a music teacher at East
Side Elementary this year.

Mrs. Holt uses color in her room to teach as is seen on this
colorful display that says, “Discover Music.” She also keeps a
tree in her room for all seasons – now a “fall” tree complete with
colorful leaves, flowers, and scarecrows.
Lynn Holt is back at East Side Elementary this
year, not as a tutor of math, which she did last year, but as the
school’s new music teacher. She has been playing the piano most of
her life and is excited about sharing her love of music with the
students.
“All kids love music,” she said, adding that she
focuses on teaching her students theory at East Side. “Note
reading, elements, and note values are what we are working on,”
she said. She says her students especially love fast music and
also enjoy learning to play instruments. They are now working on
patriotic music and seasonal songs. And it won’t be long before
students will be performing for each other, family and friends,
their Christmas program, “Letters to Santa.” The students also
perform at each Awards Rally and in a spring program
East Side students recognized at Awards Rally

East Side Elementary students know that when they do well in
school, everyone will hear about it at the Awards Rally held after
each six weeks. Students who make an “A” or “B” in reading and in
math receive a ribbon and are recognized at the program. “We feel
this will encourage students to work harder in these areas,”
Principal Tammie Canada said. “Reading and math are the AYP
subjects, and we want to encourage their best work.”
The East Side administrators, faculty and staff members recognize
students for achievement in other subject areas, but only one
person is chosen per class. Students are also recognized for
earning first and second honor roll status, good handwriting, good
conduct, most improved, and good character. “There is no reason
for any student to go unrecognized at East Side School,” Mrs.
Canada said. Music and singing are part of the program, as well as
cheers presented by several classes.
