Welcome to a new year
It is my pleasure to welcome all Haywood County students to
the 2008-2009 school year. As interim director, I realize the
great responsibility our school system has in shaping the
lives of the children. We hope all students have settled into
their classrooms and are looking forward to a great school
year.
As you may have heard, our system made AYP during the last
school year, and we are proud of the administrators, teachers
and students for their hard work. This is an ongoing challenge
for us all, and you should know that our administrators are
ever vigilant in doing what needs to be done to continue this
trend in our schools. I have visited all the schools this
year and always enjoy seeing all the children at work and at
play. It’s part of our job to provide not only academic
training in our schools but also lessons in good behavior,
social interaction, the arts, music, and athletics. Each
school is providing healthy food choices and exercise
opportunities for the students to promote a healthier
lifestyle and opportunities to learn through hands-on
experiences in many different areas. We want our schools to be
a well-rounded learning experience for all children.
So, to all the students and their families, let’s join
together for another year to give our children an exceptional
educational experience. It’s the most important thing we can
do for them and for our community.

East Side students meet J.P. and Friends

A popular attraction at East Side during the AYP Celebration was a
puppet and ventriloquist show featuring Ventriloquist Marcie
Hendrix of Jackson. She brought along J. P. who literally stole
the show and won the hearts of the students.
Dinosaur Ball at East Side

Students at East Side Elementary enjoyed a
friendly game of Dinosaur Ball during AYP Day on August 30.
Third-graders adapt to new school

New third graders at East Side Elementary
school are settling in and adapting to a new school and a little
more responsibility. They now have six subject books, spelling,
reading, math, social studies, science and language, instead of
just workbooks. They are also responsible for keeping up with
their “planners.” According to Principal Tammy Canada, the schools
purchases the school planners for the students to help them keep
up with their assignments and to improve communication with
parents about these assignments. The planner pages are divided by
dates and subjects so students can write in their assignments each
day, also an effort in increasing their organizational skills.

Haywood Schools hold “Camp Invention”

Forty-two Haywood County students participated June 25-29 in Camp Invention 2007
held at East Side Elementary. This is the third year for the program that
challenges children to create, work together as teams, and develop science
literacy and inventive thinking skills. At the Inventor’s Showcase program on
Friday, students told parents about the camp’s different activities, and at the
end, picked up their “inventions” to take home..more
