Brief Notes
Doris Battle, Editor

Welcome to a new year

It is my pleasure to welcome all Haywood County students to the 2008-2009 school year. As interim director, I realize the great responsibility our school system has in shaping the lives of the children. We hope all students have settled into their classrooms and are looking forward to a great school year.

As you may have heard, our system made AYP during the last school year, and we are proud of the administrators, teachers and students for their hard work. This is an ongoing challenge for us all, and you should know that our administrators are ever vigilant in doing what needs to be done to continue this trend in our schools.

I have visited all the schools this year and always enjoy seeing all the children at work and at play. It’s part of our job to provide not only academic training in our schools but also lessons in good behavior, social interaction, the arts, music, and athletics. Each school is providing healthy food choices and exercise opportunities for the students to promote a healthier lifestyle and opportunities to learn through hands-on experiences in many different areas. We want our schools to be a well-rounded learning experience for all children.

So, to all the students and their families, let’s join together for another year to give our children an exceptional educational experience. It’s the most important thing we can do for them and for our community.

Teachers “Expanding the Reach”

Anderson Early Childhood Center was voted the “Best of Show” among the poster entries at the Expanding the Reach Leadership Retreat in Texas in July. Pictured receiving the winner’s certificate were (from left) Anderson Principal Mary Colling and teachers Nicole Henderson and Sylvia Harwell.

Eleven local educators were among the more than 100 state directors, district leaders, principals, reading coaches and classroom teachers attended the Expanding the Reach Leadership Retreat held July 25-28 in Austin, Texas. The purpose of the program is to provide professional development to the schools so teachers can increase student achievement in reading. Anderson Early Childhood Center, Haywood Elementary and East Side Elementary were trained in this program for three years.

Attending from Haywood County were Anderson Principal Mary Colling, and teachers Sylvia Harwell and Nicole Henderson; Haywood Elementary Principal Jean Wills, Assistant Principal Carolyn Caldwell and teachers Cindy Currie and Amanda Stanley; East Side Principal Tammie Canada and Assistant Principal Yvette Blue and teacher Kellie Davis; and Haywood Schools Supervisor of Instruction Teresa Russell.

“Our teachers’ knowledge base has increased tremendously over the last few years after receiving the Expanding the Reach training,” said Russell. “The teachers will continue to incorporate these practices to help their students improve their reading skills.”
