“The Standards” perform for Haywood County
students

Haywood County students were brought to their feet by a singing group that
visited most schools on September 10 and 11 and presented a concert at College
Hill Thursday night. “The Standards,” a five-member group of brothers who have
been harmonizing together since they were young, made a return to Haywood County
to bring their music and message to the students after Interim Director of

School board approves criteria for selecting new director

on Tuesday, September 2, the Haywood County School Board members witnessed the
swearing in of their two new members, Daniel Thornton and Allen Currie.
Officiating at the ceremony was Haywood County Mayor Franklin Smith. Afterwards,
board vice-chairman Harold Garrett presided over the meeting with Tennessee
School Board Association (TSBA) Executive Director Dr. Tammy Grissom as the

August school board bids farewell to two

Haywood County School Board members, friends, associates and family members
gathered at the board office on Tuesday afternoon to bid farewell to Board
Chairman Patricia Gruenewald, a board member for 33 years. She presided over her
last meeting that night and received accolades from her fellow board members as
well as a proclamation and the traditional school bell. Joining her after the
meeting were Interim Director of Schools Doris Battle and Joe Barden IV, a
four-year board member who did not seek re-election. He also received a school

2008 AYP Report

Interim Director of Schools Doris Battle opened the 2008-2009 school year
Friday, August 1, with a system-wide inservice in the HHS gymnasium for the
county’s more than 400 school administrators and teachers, and other employees,
including those from the school board office and school board members. Mrs.
Battle welcomed everyone to the new school year and asked them to continue
giving their best for the children. She also made a presentation of the county’s
Report Card, announcing the Haywood County Schools made Average Yearly Progress
and is in “Good Standing.” Students began school on Tuesday, August 5. A
fond farewell

Retiring Haywood County School Board Chairman Patricia Gruenewald thanked
everyone for their service at the Haywood County Schools opening inservice on
August 1, and talked about her years on the school board. “I have a passion for
the students,” she said, expressing her appreciation for what teachers do. She
also said she would put this school system up to any other in the nation in her
farewell speech to school system employees gathered in the HHS gymnasium. She
has served on the school board for 33 years and as chairman since 1988.
Setting the “Standards”

The singing group “The Standards” set the pace at the schools’ first day
for teachers on August 1. Their upbeat music and message had everyone clapping
and moving with the program they presented. The group from Franklin, Tennessee,
provides a variety of programs for schools across the nation.
School board hears budget report, approves
handbooks

Lots of family, friends and school associates were at the
Board of Education office on Tuesday, July 8, to offer their well wishes to
