County
conducted the swearing-in ceremony Friday morning, September 1, for all elected
county officials. Among those participating in the ceremony were three Haywood
County School Board members (from

starting his 18th year on the school board while Mrs. Hess and Mrs. King
are new members of the board. Mrs. Hess brings with her 42 years of

Haywood Schools make the grade
Director of Schools George Chapman was proud to announce on Wednesday, August
16, that Haywood County Schools made the grade once again. Yes, for the second
year in a row, ALL six Haywood County Schools made AYP – Adequate Yearly
Progress. And all are in “Good Standing” as is the county school system as a
whole.
You will remember that all schools in America are now governed by the Federal No
Child Left Behind law that requires schools to meet performance benchmarks in
math, reading and attendance for grades 3-8 and in math, English and graduation
rate for high schools. More details about the local schools’ grades will be
available soon, according to Director Chapman.
Director Chapman also announced that he has named September 1 as AYP Day in all
schools and asked principals to plan a day of fun and celebration for all
students.
There is also good news for the entire state. Of the 1,693 public elementary,
middle and high schools in Tennessee, 1,368 are in good standing. Only 96 (or
5%) are high priority schools (did not meet AYP for two consecutive years), and
229 (13%) are target schools (did not meet AYP for 1 year).
