School board re-elects Gruenewald as board
chairman

At the September 11 Haywood County School Board meeting, board members
re-elected Patricia Gruenewald to serve as chairman and Harold Garrett to serve
as vice-chairman this year. They also took action on several school and travel

School board
approves federal budget
When the Haywood County School Board met August 14, among other
business, members approved a federal budget of about 2.2 million dollars. These
funds, according to Director of Schools George Chapman, are really considered
“in and out” funds because the money is earmarked for specific federal programs
– including the Title programs, Perkins money for career and technical programs
and funds for special education. These funds are not included in the school’s
county budget...more
Haywood Schools celebrate AYP scores
Haywood County Schools Director George Chapman announced on August 2 to
school administrators and educators that Haywood County Schools made the grade
again with their test results for the 2006-2007 school year. By meeting all
Adequately Yearly Progress benchmarks as required by the federal No Child Left
Behind Act, all Haywood County Schools and the school system are considered in
“Good Standing” for the third consecutive year.

School board approves budget
School board members met in a called session July 18 and approved the 2007-08
budget that will go before the county budget committee. Spending is expected to
be $22,988,672, and revenue estimates are $22,418,672. That’s $570,000 off
balance, but Director of Schools George Chapman said that he plans to take that
amount from the school’s fund balance – which is about $2.4 million – rather
than ask the county for more money...more
School board to “call” budget meeting
When the Haywood County School Board met in regular session July 10, they
took care of several items, but had to put off budget approval – because it
isn’t ready. Just like the city and county, the school’s budget cannot be set
until there is a state certified tax rate, and, according to Property Assessor
Dare Simpson, that has not yet been determined. Board members adjourned subject
to call when they can finalize the budget. We’ll let you know when we find out

School Board June 12 Meeting
The Haywood County School Board met Tuesday night, June 12, to take care of
year-end 2006-2007 budget amendments and to approve a continuation budget for
the upcoming school year. They also recognized the top two seniors at Haywood
High, nominated a senior to serve in the student position on the State Board of
