Brief Notes
Doris Battle, Editor

Welcome to a new year

It is my pleasure to welcome all Haywood County students to the 2008-2009 school year. As interim director, I realize the great responsibility our school system has in shaping the lives of the children. We hope all students have settled into their classrooms and are looking forward to a great school year.

As you may have heard, our system made AYP during the last school year, and we are proud of the administrators, teachers and students for their hard work. This is an ongoing challenge for us all, and you should know that our administrators are ever vigilant in doing what needs to be done to continue this trend in our schools.

I have visited all the schools this year and always enjoy seeing all the children at work and at play. It’s part of our job to provide not only academic training in our schools but also lessons in good behavior, social interaction, the arts, music, and athletics. Each school is providing healthy food choices and exercise opportunities for the students to promote a healthier lifestyle and opportunities to learn through hands-on experiences in many different areas. We want our schools to be a well-rounded learning experience for all children.

So, to all the students and their families, let’s join together for another year to give our children an exceptional educational experience. It’s the most important thing we can do for them and for our community.

Haywood Elementary students visit with local firemen

Annette Hill’s second-graders enjoyed a visit from the Brownsville Fire
Department recently. Firefighters Chris Milton and Robbie Cates explained
their jobs as firefighters. The children had many questions to ask since
they had just read a story about firefighters and their jobs. It was
certainly a treat for all.

Clara Richardson Teacher of the Year

Selected as Haywood Elementary Teacher of the Year is Clara Richardson. Ms. Richardson has been teaching for 38 years and teaches advanced readiness/first grade and transition/first grade. She holds a bachelor of science degree from Union University and has additional hours from Freed-Hardeman, Lambuth and Austin Peay State University. She was named the Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year in 1999, and was also selected as a Building Level Teacher of the Year in 1999.

Haywood Elementary teachers benefit from in-service

Dr. Nancy Cherry and Dr. Kenneth Newman, instructors in the Union University Education Department presented an in-service to Haywood Elementary teachers recently. The purpose of the in-service was to share the latest research data on teaching reading and increasing reading skills.

The Jackson Symphony sponsors art/music contest

The Jackson Symphony recently sponsored an art/music contest at Haywood Elementary School. HES students Zayvania Byrum and Grant Carr were selected as Blue Ribbon winners and Raven Harville was honorable mention. The students were recognized at a reception in the afternoon and invited to attend the symphony performance on Saturday evening, March 8.

Black History program draws on talent of students and faculty

Students, faculty and staff members presented at Haywood Elementary School a Black History Program on February 29. The program began with Ms. Graves’ first-grade class performing an African dance, followed by students in the school singing some familiar spirituals.

A short play, “What If There Were No Black Folks,” followed with second-graders as the actors and Assistant Principal Carolyn Caldwell narrating.

“The students learned some important history while watching the different inventors and inventions portrayed in the play,” Mrs. Caldwell said.

The powerful words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. rang throughout the gymnasium, as second-grader Tyler Morton recited segments of the famous “I Have a Dream” speech. A color guard, comprised of local Cub Scouts, presented the American Flag as everyone joined in singing “America.”

The students also enjoyed watching the faculty and staff join in the celebration as Alexandria Seaton sang a solo of “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,” Shaquana Leonard recited Maya Angelou’s “Still I Rise” poem, and Diane Reid directed the faculty/staff choir as they sang “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” the national black anthem.

The Haywood Elementary gymnasium rocked to the sounds of the piano under the skillful hands of pianists Wardean Douglas and Anita Matthews, while Mary Marcantel and Patricia Gaietto organized the colorful props and music.
