Haywood Elementary students visit with local firemen


Annette Hill’s second-graders enjoyed a visit from
the Brownsville Fire
Department recently. Firefighters Chris Milton and Robbie Cates
explained
their jobs as firefighters. The children had many questions to
ask since
they had just read a story about firefighters and their jobs. It
was
certainly a treat for all.
Clara Richardson Teacher of the Year

Selected as Haywood Elementary Teacher of the Year
is Clara Richardson. Ms. Richardson has been teaching for 38 years
and teaches advanced readiness/first grade and transition/first
grade. She holds a bachelor of science degree from Union
University and has additional hours from Freed-Hardeman, Lambuth
and Austin Peay State University. She was named the Wal-Mart
Teacher of the Year in 1999, and was also selected as a Building
Level Teacher of the Year in 1999.
Haywood Elementary teachers benefit from
in-service

Dr. Nancy Cherry and Dr. Kenneth Newman,
instructors in the Union University Education Department presented
an in-service to Haywood Elementary teachers recently. The purpose
of the in-service was to share the latest research data on
teaching reading and increasing reading skills.
The Jackson Symphony sponsors art/music contest

The Jackson Symphony recently sponsored an
art/music contest at Haywood Elementary School. HES students
Zayvania Byrum and Grant Carr were selected as Blue Ribbon winners
and Raven Harville was honorable mention. The students were
recognized at a reception in the afternoon and invited to attend
the symphony performance on Saturday evening, March 8.
Black History program draws on talent of
students and faculty

Students, faculty and staff members presented at Haywood
Elementary School a Black History Program on February 29. The
program began with Ms. Graves’ first-grade class performing an
African dance, followed by students in the school singing some
familiar spirituals.

A short play, “What If There Were No Black Folks,”
followed with second-graders as the actors and Assistant Principal
Carolyn Caldwell narrating.
“The students learned some important history while
watching the different inventors and inventions portrayed in the
play,” Mrs. Caldwell said.

The powerful words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
rang throughout the gymnasium, as second-grader Tyler Morton
recited segments of the famous “I Have a Dream” speech. A color
guard, comprised of local Cub Scouts, presented the American Flag
as everyone joined in singing “America.”

The students also enjoyed watching the faculty and
staff join in the celebration as Alexandria Seaton sang a solo of
“Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,” Shaquana Leonard recited Maya
Angelou’s “Still I Rise” poem, and Diane Reid directed the
faculty/staff choir as they sang “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” the
national black anthem.
The Haywood Elementary gymnasium rocked to the
sounds of the piano under the skillful hands of pianists Wardean
Douglas and Anita Matthews, while Mary Marcantel and Patricia
Gaietto organized the colorful props and music.
