Wills, principal at Haywood Elementary, and her faculty and staff
want their office staff, Mary Beth Freels and Joyce Caldwell, to
know how much they appreciate them and everything they do.
Students present “Hee-Hawing” talent

Haywood Elementary Principal Jean Wills
delighted her students when she dressed the part of one of the
“Hee Haw” characters in honor of the theme of their annual
year-end music program.

The Haywood Elementary music department, under the direction of
Patricia Gaietto, is always a success, and this year’s “Hee Haw”
program was no exception. Dressed in their very best farm and
country outfits, the second-grade students entertained a packed
house Friday morning, April 27, with their jokes and renditions of
“On Top of Spaghetti,” Clementine,” “Stand by Your Man,” “Elvira,”
and the famous “Hee-Haw” song, “Gloom, Despair, and Agony on Me,”
among other songs. Accompanying the students was teacher Cheri
Velotta, and the stage designer was art teacher Mary Marcantel.
The first graders put on a similar program Friday at 1, also
delighting a gym full of family and friends
HHS choirs entertain young students

Members of the Haywood High School Show Choir, Girls Ensemble and
Concert Choir entertained students at Haywood Elementary on
Monday, April 21, with the songs and choreography of their
2006-2007 shows. The numbers ranged from Disney tunes to patriotic
to “Proud Mary,” a Tina Turner song. HHS choir teacher Michelle
Tillman accompanied the students when they visited several schools
on Monday and entertained residents at Sugar Creek Retirement
Center as one of their year-end performances.

Haywood Elementary Arts Week highlights talent

Haywood Elementary students’ artistic talent was
on display April 23-27 when the school celebrated Arts Week. The
walls were lined with the creations of the young students, and
banners were hanging throughout the school displaying the unique
“works” so parents and visitors could also enjoy the different art
projects students did this year. Mary Marcantel is the art teacher
at Haywood Elementary.

Congratulations on a job well done!

Haywood Elementary School faculty and students were excited to
welcome Doris Battle, Haywood County Assistant Superintendent of
Schools, to a recent awards program.Mrs. Battle greeted each
student receiving an award with a warm smile and words of
congratulations on a job well done.
“Expanding the Reach”

Adrienne Bowden and Bonnie Freeman observed in classrooms, then
conducted professional development sessions for Haywood
Elementary’s first- and second-grade teachers. This training is a
continuation of “Expanding the Reach,” a scientifically-based
reading research project of the U.S. Department of Education in
which our school is participating.
Gardening with the “Masters”

Walter Battle, local UT Extension Service leader and Master
Gardener instructor, is the “driving force” behind the local
Master Gardner program. An integral part of becoming a Master
Gardener is performing community service. So, Battle, along with
other Master Gardener participants, volunteered to spend the day
at Haywood Elementary planting and helping the children and staff
landscape beds in front of the gymnasium.
