Students and faculty honor Principal Jean Wills
on Arbor Day

Students and faculty at Haywood Elementary honored
Principal Jean Wills for her 12 years of dedicated service to
the school on Arbor Day by planting in her honor a white dogwood
in front of the school’s gymnasium. Teacher Cindy Smith wrote a
poem for the occasion as well.

“We are all so sad to see Miss Jean leave and
wanted her to know how much she has done for the school, the
students, and the community during her years of service here.
The central office’s gain is certainly our loss,” said HES art
teacher Mary Marcantel.
Haywood County Schools Superintendent Marlon King
appointed Mrs. Wills to serve on his staff at the central office
as Instructional Specialist, Elementary Education in the next
school year.
What basketball?

No, it’s not “Where’s Waldo.” Can you see the
camouflage basketball in this picture?

SSGT Julie Miller, the new Army National Guard
recruiter for this area, was at Haywood Elementary this week to
present 20 of the special "camo" basketballs to the school.
Accepting SSGT Miller’s kind donation on behalf of the school
was Mrs. Jean Wills and students in Mrs. Shalonda Pugh's first
grade class. “Thank you so much for your kind donation to our
students,” Principal Wills said.
Haywood Elementary students presents “Tomcat
History”

Haywood Elementary student Iyana Taylor was a
hit at the Haywood County School Board meeting on April 14 when
she made a presentation about how the Tomcats got their name.
She is a student in Mrs. Cindy Currie’s class, and this was a
research project assignment for all students in the class. She
is the daughter of Shauntya and Christopher Taylor.
HES students are “Energized”

Haywood Elementary students were entertained and educated by the
ENERGIZED GUYZ on Thursday, April 9. This group was sponsored by
TVA to inform students about the importance of energy
conservation. More than 250,000 children at more than 200
elementary schools in the Tennessee Valley have attended
performances of “The Energized Guyz,” a 25-minute play written
especially to teach young children about the importance of
saving energy.
Performed by actors on tour from the Minnesota-based National
Theatre for Children, “The Energized Guyz” provides not only
interactive entertainment for kids K-6, but also educates them
about energy issues that TVA and local utilities are facing. TVA
Office of Environment and Research Senior Vice-President Anda
Ray realized how powerful theater can be in communicating
important messages about energy and water conservation and
renewable energy to young people.
Mr. Ray said, “We think that this education program will help our
youth raise the bar for all of us by providing them the
information to demonstrate and encourage ways we can improve the
environment and preserve resources for future generations.”
Easter Bunny visits Haywood Elementary

EGG-citement filled the air at Haywood Elementary School on
Thursday morning, April 9, as students enjoyed an Easter Egg
Hunt. And they were so happy when the Easter Bunny hopped in to
say hello!

HHS Show and Concert choirs entertain HES
students

Monday the gymnasium at Haywood Elementary was filled with the
beautiful sound of music emanating from the HHS Show Choir and
the Concert Choir.
It was a joy to see students back at “gold ole’ HES” and
appreciate how they have grown and matured over the past 6-10
years.

“Congratulations to the high school students for your excellent
performance. We hope they have a great life and visit us again
soon,” said Haywood Elementary Principal Jean Wills. |
