Students earn “healthy” awards

Mrs. Sharon Thornton, Coordinator for School Health, was present
at the Haywood Elementary fifth six weeks award program to
recognize students’ commitment to a healthier life style.
Parents and students kept a calendar at home to record
activities the students participated in at home that reflect
healthy life choices. These calendars were then returned to
school and a lucky boy and girl from each grade level received
exercise equipment to celebrate their commitment.

Mrs. Thornton also presented a plaque to Haywood Elementary School
with the names of the “fastest kids in school.” Each year the
name of the boy and girl that can run a mile in the fastest time
will be added to the plaque.
Haywood Elementary holds awards ceremony

Mrs. Toni Eubanks was the guest presenter for the Haywood
Elementary awards program. Mrs. Eubanks taught at HES for 20
years and is now the Executive Director of Human Resources for
the school system.

Police Chief Chris Lea and Mrs. Lisa Carlton were present to
present a bicycle to a lucky second grader on behalf of the
Rotary Club. Each six weeks a child that has had perfect
attendance for the six weeks is rewarded for this
accomplishment.

Assistant Principal Stephen May presented the Character Trait
winner for each grade level. The character trait for the past
six weeks was “Caring.”

Mrs. Bridgit Dancy recognized Reading Wall of Fame recipients.
President's Fitness Challenge at HES

The second grade recently participated in their annual President's
Fitness Challenge of running and/or walking one mile. Each child
is timed and is recognized at an award's day if they meet or
exceed the 50 percentile for time. Each child's time is a direct
measure of their cardio-respiratory fitness level. One teacher
at Haywood Elementary, Ms. Stacie LeFave, decided to run with
her class this year. This was a noticeable motivation for her
kids to try harder. She set a great example to her students!
HES is host to mid-month School Board meeting

Haywood Elementary was pleased to host the Haywood County School
Board's April luncheon meeting on Tuesday, April 27. “This is
one small way that we can show the school board how much we
appreciate all they do to help make HES a place ‘Where Great
Things Happen,’” Principal Tracy Riddle said.

Haywood Elementary celebrates Professional Assistant Day

April 21 was Professional Assistant Day in America, and at Haywood
Elementary we celebrated the day by honoring our teacher
assistants and office assistants with a “homecooked” luncheon.
Teachers and administrators at our school lovingly prepared the
meal for this dedicated and valued segment of our population.
“Ladies, we couldn’t do it without each and every one of you,”
said Principal Tracy Riddle. “Thank you for the job you do so
willingly and well each day!”
Carl Perkins representatives visit Haywood Elementary

The Haywood Elementary library had some special visitors recently.
A few of the board members and employees came to visit us from
the Carl Perkins Center. They brought the students some tattoos.
The month of April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, and the
students were made aware of this when they were given special
tattoos that said “Handle me with care.” This is the second year
we have enjoyed a visit from representatives of the Carl Perkins
Center.
