HES students learn about cicadas

Do you hear a high-pitched shrill noise ringing in
your ears when you go outside? Students from Ms. Killebrew's
second-grade class joined Haywood Elementary art teacher Ms.
Mary Marcantel on a nature walk to find the source of this
racket and learned the culprits were cicadas. Our area has 16-
and 17-year locusts active in the area at this time. The
students found several empty shells on trees and on the ground
but were not successful in finding a live cicada. They did enjoy
learning about this noisy neighbor.

Summer program offers art projects to students

Jarvis, a second-grade student in Ms. Aggreh's
class at Haywood Elementary, brought a beautiful stepping stone
to share with his classmates. Jarvis created the artwork while
participating in the Brownsville-Haywood County Parks and
Recreation summer program. Our city and county are fortunate to
have such wonderful opportunities available for our children.
HES students and staff enjoy morning meetings

At HES the students, faculty and staff begin each day with a
“Morning Meeting” in the gym where everyone spends some time
together to get a great start to the day. During these meetings
we stand for a moment of silence, remain standing at attention
for the National Anthem and recite the Pledge of Allegiance to
our nation’s flag. Next, Principal Mrs. Tracy Riddle recognizes
those at the school who have a birthday, and everyone joins in
to sing “Happy Birthday.” Mrs. Riddle then makes announcements
to keep everyone informed of special events for the day. After
announcements, teachers and students go to their classroom for a
full day of learning.
HES welcomes families and guests to open house

It was “standing room only” on August 17 at Haywood
Elementary School as the faculty and staff, under the guidance
of Principals Mrs. Tracy Riddle and Mr. Steven May, welcomed
parents and guests to open house. The audience enjoyed a virtual
tour of each classroom in the building and then went to their
students classrooms and spoke with teachers. The cafeteria staff
prepared delicious chocolate chip cookies and punch for
refreshments.

First-graders enjoy lesson on crabs

Mrs. Pamla Reagan’s first-grade class read “There was an Old Lady
who Swallowed a Shell.” The book mentioned a crab living in a
shell, so Mrs. Pamla brought in two hermit crabs for the
students to observe. “We made a class chart that showed what the
students observed, wondered, and learned,” she said. “The big
thing that the class learned was that the shell is like the
crab’s house and it can leave and go to a different house
(shell). Some of the students wanted to hold the crabs, and
others were scared they might get pinched.”

Welcome to Haywood Elementary!
It was all smiles as parents and students celebrated the first
