Grandparents share

Haywood Elementary students enjoyed visitors on September 9
in honor of “Grandparents Day.” Geneva Mask (pictured) was among
the grandparents who participated by visiting their
grandchildren’s classes and reading or talking to students about
their hobbies or life experiences. “The response was great.”
Principal Jean Wills said. “We had between 50 and 60 grandparents
to visit.”
Farris Hill motivates Haywood Elementary students
On September 23, motivational speaker and recording artist, Dr.
Fairest Hill, spoke at a Haywood Elementary assembly of students
about the importance of academic achievement and building
character and self-esteem.
Dr. Hill, who was born and raised in inner city of Detroit,
Michigan, was labeled functionally illiterate and was failing in
school before the intervention of a caring, committed teacher and
his gift for music changed his life.
During his career, Dr. Hill has collaborated and performed with
a variety of national recording artists. He is the
founder/director of Youth on the Move, USA, and CEO of Vision
Production and Publishing Company. He is the author of a book
title, “Yes You Can Win,” and he has developed a curriculum
targeting at-risk students called “Project 2000: Building Leaders
for the 21st Century.” He has spoken to over 1 million youth in
the United States and abroad and has been to Haywood County
Schools several times before.
Annual Career Day inspires students
Haywood Elementary School held its 10th Annual Career Day on
Wednesday, October 5, with the help of local organizations,
individuals and businesses. Students and teachers learned about a
variety of careers at exhibits set up on the front lawn of the
school’s campus.
Participating were Mayor Webb Banks, Haywood
Company, Elma Ross
Public Library, Boys and Girls Club. Leaning Oaks Farm, Regions
Bank, Haywood County YMCA, Children and Family Services of
Covington, Haywood High School Future Farmers of America, the HHS
Junior ROTC, HOSA from Haywood High School (nursing education),
personnel from the Haywood County Ambulance Authority, Brownsville
Utility Department, Brownsville Fire Department and the
Brownsville Police
Department, Lasco Fittings, the University of
Tennessee Extension Service, All Care Chiropractic Clinic, Insouth
Bank and the Brownsville-Haywood County Chamber of Commerce.
“It was an educational day for all students,” said assistant
principal Carolyn Caldwell.

First honor roll students not only
get all “A’s” for their efforts at Haywood Elementary School, they
enjoy a celebration of some sorts for their academic achievement.
Their prize for doing well in the classroom the second six weeks –
a pizza party. The first six weeks they went to McDonalds for
their reward, and later in the year, they will go on other field
trips for their hard work. Eighty-six students at Haywood
Elementary were on the first honor roll the second six weeks.
