Grandparents share

Haywood Elementary students enjoyed visitors on September 9 in honor of “Grandparents Day.” Geneva Mask (pictured) was among the grandparents who participated by visiting their grandchildren’s classes and reading or talking to students about their hobbies or life experiences. “The response was great.” Principal Jean Wills said. “We had between 50 and 60 grandparents to visit.”

Farris Hill motivates Haywood Elementary students

On September 23, motivational speaker and recording artist, Dr. Fairest Hill, spoke at a Haywood Elementary assembly of students about the importance of academic achievement and building character and self-esteem.

Dr. Hill, who was born and raised in inner city of Detroit, Michigan, was labeled functionally illiterate and was failing in school before the intervention of a caring, committed teacher and his gift for music changed his life.

During his career, Dr. Hill has collaborated and performed with a variety of national recording artists. He is the founder/director of Youth on the Move, USA, and CEO of Vision Production and Publishing Company. He is the author of a book title, “Yes You Can Win,” and he has developed a curriculum targeting at-risk students called “Project 2000: Building Leaders for the 21st Century.” He has spoken to over 1 million youth in the United States and abroad and has been to Haywood County Schools several times before.

Annual Career Day inspires students

Haywood Elementary School held its 10th Annual Career Day on Wednesday, October 5, with the help of local organizations, individuals and businesses. Students and teachers learned about a variety of careers at exhibits set up on the front lawn of the school’s campus.

Participating were Mayor Webb Banks, Haywood Company, Elma Ross Public Library, Boys and Girls Club. Leaning Oaks Farm, Regions Bank, Haywood County YMCA, Children and Family Services of Covington, Haywood High School Future Farmers of America, the HHS Junior ROTC, HOSA from Haywood High School (nursing education), personnel from the Haywood County Ambulance Authority, Brownsville Utility Department, Brownsville Fire Department and the Brownsville Police Department, Lasco Fittings, the University of Tennessee Extension Service, All Care Chiropractic Clinic, Insouth Bank and the Brownsville-Haywood County Chamber of Commerce.

“It was an educational day for all students,” said assistant principal Carolyn Caldwell.

Their prize for doing well in the classroom the second six weeks – a pizza party. The first six weeks they went to McDonalds for their reward, and later in the year, they will go on other field trips for their hard work.
