Over 1600 Items Collected for Food Drive
By: Peggy Jackson

Recently, a need was identified by the local Carl
Perkins Center for food to distribute to families in Haywood
County during the holiday season. The Family Resource Center at
Haywood Elementary in partnership with the Tennessee Nutrition &
Consumer Education Program (TNCEP) of the University of TN
Extension organized a food drive that was held at Haywood
Elementary and East Side Schools.
The “YES, YOU CAN BRING A CAN!” food drive
encouraged all students and staff members to bring one canned or
non-perishable food item to contribute to The Carl Perkins food
pantry. The overwhelming response produced a collection of over
1600 items to assist many Haywood County families in having a
happier, healthier holiday season. Our goal to collect food for
the food pantry also proved to be a great way to teach our
children to help others!
I personally want to thank the administration of
East Side (Tammie Canada and Yvette Blue); the Haywood Elementary
administration (Jean Wills and Carolyn Caldwell) and the UT
Extension Director (Walter Battle) who personally loaded the food
items and delivered them to The Carl Perkins Center and all the
parents and children who contributed to the Food Drive. This was
truly a great experience for all involved.
Parents are invited to visit The Family Resource
Centers, located on the campuses of Anderson and Haywood
Elementary Schools. The Centers are open Monday-Friday from 8:00 –
3:30 and are a team effort of UT Extension and the Haywood County
School System.
