HES students delight visitors with Christmas
songs

Haywood Elementary students performed wonderful
holiday songs during their Christmas programs on Friday, December
5, much to the delight of a packed gymnasium of faculty, staff,
parents and other visitors. HES music teacher Patricia Gaietto led
the program.

Ollie tells students about being safe

Ollie, the Tennessee State Trooper otter, visited
Haywood Elementary on December 10 to teach students about vehicle
safety passenger laws. A child must be in a properly installed
booster seat if he or she is under 9 years of age or 4'9" in
height. Children who are older than 9 and taller than 4'9" must
wear a seat belt at all times, just as their parents do. These
vehicle safety laws help protect the lives of children and adults
throughout our great state.

Haywood Elementary receives SACS accreditation

SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools) team members
visited Haywood Elementary on December 3 to begin a review of the
school for accreditation. On Wednesday, the team enjoyed breakfast
with 35 community stakeholders, including school board members, a
county commissioner, parents and the school leadership team.
The SACS review team interviewed stakeholders, the leadership
team, students, teacher assistants and teachers. On Thursday,
December 4, the review team spent the day visiting classrooms and
reviewing the school’s documentation gathered for the review
process.
According to Principal Jean Wills, on Thursday afternoon, at a
celebration in the library, the review team made their
recommendation for SACS approval for Haywood Elementary with
glowing words of praise for the school.
Indians invade Haywood Elementary

Indians invaded the Haywood Elementary building
during the week before Thanksgiving, and many of them took up
residence in Mrs. Barbara Bond’s and Miss. April Horn’s classroom.
Luckily they were pacified with turkey and dressing and all is now
well.

Math intervention classes improve student
performance

Ms. Katrina Hill, the HES computer teacher,
conducts math intervention classes each morning from 7:15 to 7:30.
There are currently 21 students signed up for this program. Ms.
Hill has prepared an individualized student improvement plan (SIP)
for each of the students who attend. Goals are established for
each student, and they work in small groups as well as
individually to meet these goals. Ms. Hill averages 15 students
each day in this important intervention program.
Wal-Mart donates Christmas tree to Haywood
Elementary

HES students are enjoying WalMart’s recent
donation of a giant Christmas tree and all of the lights and
decorations needed to brighten the lobby. Everyone at Haywood
Elementary says, “Thank you, Wal-Mart!”
Students say “I Am Thankful”

Miss Stacy LeFave’s second-grade class takes great
pride in announcing the
publication of their first book, “I Am Thankful.” Each student in
the
class wrote and illustrated a page in the book which tells for
what they are
thankful. The professionally published, hardbound book, was the
culmination of the students’ studies on the processes involved in
writing
and illustrating a book. |
