Family Fun Night

Lights, camera, action! February 9th was the date of the First
Annual Family Fun Night at Haywood Elementary. Over 300 students,
parents and teachers “camped out” in the gym to watch “Open
Season.”
Jurassic Park … no, Haywood Elementary

No, you are not in Jurassic Park. You’re at Haywood Elementary
School and it is dinosaur time for first-grade students. First
graders shared their knowledge of dinosaurs with their
families as they created dioramas showing what life was like
during the time dinosaurs roamed the earth.
Students enjoy performance of “Grease”

A little rain didn't dampen the spirits of Haywood Elementary
students who traveled to College Hill to attend a special
performance of “Grease,” presented by the Haywood High School
Drama Department. The boys and girls enjoyed seeing friends and
family members up on stage singing and dancing as they dreamed of
their “acting” opportunities when they reach Haywood High.
Hats “on” for Dr. Seuss!

Students and faculty members spent March 2
celebrating Dr. Seuss's birthday. Students brought their favorite
Dr. Seuss books and donned their very best hat in honor of the
day.

Mary Jones selected as one of Haywood County’s
Teachers of the Year

Mary Jones, a second-grade teacher at Haywood Elementary, was
selected by her peers as one of the Haywood County Teachers of the
Year. She is a native of Haywood County, a graduate of Carver High
School, and began her career as a teacher only about 10 years ago.
Prior to going to college as an adult, Jones had worked in the
financial industry for 14 years and was a teacher’s assistant. “I
always wanted to be a teacher,” she said, and followed her dream
by taking colleges classes at night. She holds a bachelor of
science degree in education from LeMoyne-Owen College.
“Students are learning more skills at much younger age,” Jones
said, referring to the changes in schools now in contrast to
schools during her younger years. “There is more to learn, more
skills and the lessons are broader. Students also have the
advantages of using computers.”
The thrill of teaching hits home with Jones because she delights
in helping students figure out what they can be. “I tell them if
they strive and work hard, they can obtain their goals,” she said.
