Local author Taylor Wilson stresses the “power
of words”

Haywood County Author Taylor Wilson
Thirty-two years ago an aspiring author worked diligently to
complete an assignment in first-year teacher Mrs. Annette Hill’s
third-grade class, and a few days ago this now published author of
two books was back in Mrs. Hill’s Haywood Elementary classroom.
This time Taylor Wilson was there to stress to Mrs. Hill’s
second-grade class the power of words to a writer. He said, “I
like to create with words . . . this is my favorite thing to do
with words.” The students listened attentively as Wilson used his
words to share experiences he has enjoyed during his lifetime here
in Haywood County.
A Louisiana Flat Stanley visits Haywood
Elementary class

An unexpected visitor dropped in on Mrs. Shalondra Pugh’s
first-grade class recently at Haywood Elementary. The famous and
well-traveled “Flat Stanley” had traveled from Fort Polk in
Louisiana to spend time with a first-grade class in Tennessee.
Asia White sent Stanley to visit her cousin’s class in
Brownsville. The children had lots of fun with Stanley and sent
him back home with a scrapbook full of pictures showing him doing
classroom activities with them. Stanley also carried lots of
promotional items from
our local chamber of commerce back to Louisiana.
Celebrating 100 Days of school

Mrs. Peggy Austin’s children recently celebrated
their 100th day of school at Haywood Elementary. The children are
shown displaying the projects they completed at home with help
from their family.
Polka-dotted pups visit classroom

Although Haywood Elementary students did not have “101 Dalmations”
during their 100 Day celebration, three Dalmation puppies came to
visit Mrs. Hill’s second-grade classroom recently.
Two receive top honors during awards ceremony

Mrs. Patricia Gruenewald, Chairman of the Haywood County School
Board, was the presenter at the Haywood Elementary third six weeks
awards program in January. Cameron Polk received the Outstanding
Character Award in second grade and Jaydun White received the
award for the first grade.
Cowboys and cowgirls “round up” for learning

Mrs. Barbara Bond’s class had a rip-roaring good
time recently as they rounded up a week’s worth of study about
tale tales. Pecos Bill really caught the students’ attention, and
they all saddled up and visited a dude ranch in reading to
complete the week. |
