Haywood Elementary students enjoy fun activities
during
Read Across America Week

Cindy Currie’s and her second-grade students chose
to celebrate Read Across America Week by dressing up as the
characters of one of their favorite books, “ 101 Dalmations.” The
children dressed as “puppies” of the leading character, “Cruella
De-Vil.”

Students in other classrooms had the opportunity to dress up as
their favorite character in a book, and they chose a colorful
variety of costumes. Special reading topics included stories about
a princess, a monkey, a nurse, Spiderman and a famous basketball
player.

During the week-long celebration at Haywood Elementary, students
wore a readable T-shirt on Monday. Tuesday was Muffins for Moms
Day and lots of mothers came to school for a muffin and to read to
the kids. Wednesday was Donuts for Dad day so fathers could get in
on the reading action, too. On Thursday, they celebrated Dr.
Seuss’s birthday by eating green eggs and ham for breakfast, and
Principal Jean Wills read the book, “Green Eggs and Ham” on the
intercom. On Friday, Haywood Elementary teachers joined in the fun
with the kids and dressed up as book characters, too.
All week long, students worked on building a class caterpillar.
Every time a student read a book, a circle was added to the body
of the caterpillar. When all the circles in the school were
counted, students had read 5,140 books in five days. The
first-grade class winner was Jeanna Lea’s class with 489 books.
Stacie Lefave’s class was the second-grade winner with 200 books
read. These two classes celebrated with ice cream at lunch on
Monday, March 6.
Learning about dinosaurs

First graders at Haywood Elementary are enjoying their science
lessons on dinosaurs. These panoramic displays that showed
different types of dinosaurs and their environments were made by
students in Bobbie Gavin’s class.
