HE holds final awards program

Haywood Elementary held its final awards program
during the final days of school, and Superintendent Marlon King
was the guest presenter.
Among the good news at the program was that HES
students read almost 24,000 books from the Family Resource
Center this year.
Good work in the physical education department was
also big news. Kay'veon Bowers ran the mile in 6 minutes, 42
seconds, and Kemiya Evans’ time was 8:58.

Ten second graders and 12 first graders had perfect
attendance for the year, and 36 second graders and 43 first
graders made all A’s and all E’s for the entire school year.

Mrs. Glenda Pettigrew was honored for her work as
PTO president over the past several years, and the top three
sellers from the schools fundraiser were presented gift cards.
In addition, Mrs. Wills and Mrs. Caldwell were
presented with a book created by the students in Mrs. Cheri
Velotta’s class.

On Wednesday, May 13, first graders at Haywood Elementary
enjoyed an activities day.

Jean Wills, and assistant principal, Carolyn Caldwell, with a
farewell luncheon on May 21.

First State Bank sponsors HE Exercise Program
Reward

Haywood Elementary ended its “Exercise of Fame Program” with every
student who participated receiving time in a jumping castle
sponsored by First State Bank. Through this sponsorship with the
bank, we were able to provide an incentive for students to get
them motivated to be active outside of the school day. Ms. Jean
Wills, Principal, even joined in for some fun and exercise.

The Program was established through the school’s Healthy School
Team with the help of Coordinated School Health Director Sharon
Thornton.
Opera Memphis performs at Haywood Elementary

The Haywood Elementary gym rang with the resounding cheers of
“bravo,” “brava” and “bravisimo, bravisimo!” as students
welcomed Opera Memphis to the school on Thursday, May 14. The
elementary school touring group presented Denise Page Caraher’s
adaptation of Jack and the Bean Stalk from Charles Gounoud's
opera, “Faust.”

The group included Stephen Carey on the keyboard; Kearstin Piper
Brown, who
portrayed Jack’s mother and the giant’s wife; Benjamin Bunsold
as Jack; and Campbell Vertesi, who was the narrator and the
giant. What a treat to have such talented performers visit our
school!
HES students celebrate Cinco de Mayo

Mrs. Dawn Lovelace, HES librarian, taught the students at Haywood
Elementary about the significance of the fifth of May, Cinco d
Mayo, to Mexico, our neighbor to the south. The students
particularly enjoyed learning to do the Mexican Hat Dance.

competition. Mrs. Cindy Currie’s class defeated Mrs. Robin
Philpot’s class for the title.
HES staff enjoys lunch

Mrs. Demetrice Adams from Project Basic treated the staff at HES
to lunch on Friday, May 8. Mrs. Adams provides a wonderful
service to our students, their families, and the staff at the
school. She always has a listening ear and a shoulder to lean on
for everyone. Thank you for all you do, Mrs. Adams, we
appreciate you!

Haywood Elementary teachers feel appreciated

Members of the Haywood Elementary PTO treated all of the school’s
faculty and staff to a luncheon at Lily’s during Teacher
Appreciation Week May 4-8. It was a special treat for everyone
to go one of three days during the week and enjoy a scrumptious
lunch.

InSouth bank sent a beautiful purple and white cake to the school
to show its appreciation for our staff. Thank you, InSouth Bank!
We appreciate all the things that this Partner in Education has
done for us throughout the year.
Haywood Elementary students learn about animal control

Ms. Shirley Key, the animal control officer for the City of
Brownsville, paid a visit to Mrs. Jenna Lea’s first-grade class
on Thursday, May 7. The children enjoyed learning about the
department and how it cares for the animals it picks up. The
Animal Shelter tries to adopt many of the animals that have no
homes.

“Miss Jean” welcomes “Miss Tracy”

HES honors students for achievement

Haywood Elementary School held its fifth six weeks
awards program on Thursday, April 30, in the school gymnasium
where students, parents and faculty welcomed special guest,
Haywood Schools Deputy Superintendent Teresa Russell, who helped
present the awards.

Can you see all the ribbons children are wearing?
These students all received “E’s” for excellent conduct for the
six weeks.
“Congratulations, boys and girls, for a job
well-done,” HES Principal Jean Wills said.
Spring flowers brighten HES campus

Mrs. Jackie Clark’s class is at it again! If you
remember, this charming group of students planted flowers at the
bus entrance at Haywood Elementary in the fall. Now that winter
has bid everyone adieu, they are planting spring flowers. The
children received a resounding “thank you” from everyone at the
school for keeping the gym area of the school so inviting. Hey,
is that a little lady with that ladybug?
