Students enjoy sports and fishing on field trip

Mrs. Natalie Darnaby Pinner’s first-grade class at Haywood
Elementary enjoyed an exciting and educational field trip to
Darnaby World at the end of the school year. When they arrived,
they found lots of outdoor activities that reviewed some of the
things they had learned in class. The students enjoyed sand
volleyball, basketball, mini-golf, fishing, and boatball. The
students also went on a nature walk where they found bird and
duck eggs, worms, ducks, and geese. Mrs. Natalie said she is
very proud of her students and the respect they show toward each
other and adults. “Good Luck Next Year!”
Students learn about giving

What comes to your mind when you think of an E-Class? Could it be
environment, energy, excellence, education? At Haywood
Elementary, the E in E-class stands for empathy. When Miss
Elizabeth Lovell’s first-grade E-class students learned that
their teacher assistant, Mrs. Cheryl McDaniel, had lost
everything in the recent flood, they went home, talked about her
loss with their families and together decided to do something to
help “Miss Cheryl.” This group of caring students and their
parents donated a total of $270 to present to Miss Cheryl to
help make things a little easier. “I was so surprised and so
thankful for what the boys and girls and their parents did for
me. I will never forget their kindness,” Miss Cheryl said.
“We are all so proud of all of the students at HES,” Mrs. Tracy
Riddle added.
Clara Richardson retires from HES

After 40 years of service to Haywood County children, Miss Clara
Richardson is retiring. “t won't be the same without Miss
Clara,” Principal Tracy Riddle said at the reception on Monday
afternoon in the Haywood Elementary library. “If you have never
met Miss Clara, or saw her with her children, you will not
realize what a great loss this is to education and Haywood
County. With a quiet dignity, a sense of humor, and
unconditional love, Miss Clara taught students, teachers, and
principals. She taught students ‘readin,’ 'ritin’ and 'rithmatic.’
She taught other teachers to never give up on a student. (How
could YOU give up on a child when Miss Clara NEVER gave up?) She
taught principals patience and determination.”
Mr. Melvin Wells, Miss Clara’s first principal, said, “She had the
drive and determination to achieve the goals she set for
herself.” Miss Clara, we will miss you!
Students learn about Yoga

Miss Annette Hill’s second-grade class at Haywood Elementary ended
the school year on “the right foot.” Mrs. Betty Carlton, owner
of Your Yoga Source, spent one morning during the last week of
school talking to Miss Annette’s class on the benefits of yoga.
She taught them some of the basic poses. She stressed breathing,
focusing and alignment. It was a great way to end the school
year.
Haywood Elementary first graders recognized at awards program

On Thursday, May 20, Haywood County School Superintendent Marlon
King was the guest presenter at Haywood Elementary’s final award
programs. Students were
recognized for their achievements throughout the year. The first
grade program was at 9 a.m., and students received academic as
well as superlative recognition.
Second graders celebrate achievement

The second-grade award program at Haywood Elementary began at 1:00
on May 20 with a hearty cheer by everyone present. The faculty
and staff and first graders will miss our second graders as they
travel to East Side next year. Superintendent Marlon King
announced the appointment of Mrs. Sandra Humphreys as Principal,
and Dr. Amy Harris as Assistant Principal, at East Side for the
2010-2011 school year. He also congratulated Mrs. Tracy Riddle
for a job well done at HES for the 2009-2010 school year.
INSOUTH Bank treats local teachers

Representatives from INSOUTH Bank made the rounds in early May to
all the county’s schools delivering a “sweet treat” for all the
teachers, in honor of Teacher Appreciation Month. The teachers
and administrators at Anderson, Haywood Elementary, East Side,
Sunny Hill, Haywood Junior High, Haywood High, the Alternative
Learning Center and at the Central office enjoyed delicious
carrot cakes, baked just for the wonderful job they do. The
teachers say, “Thank you, INSOUTH!” Delivering the cakes from
INSOUTH were Alan Callery, JoAnne Finn, Tim Stokely and Brenda
Lee.
Mrs. Carlton visits Haywood Elementary class

Mrs. Peggy Austin’s first-grade class at Haywood Elementary had an
exciting visit from Lisa Carlton from First State Bank on April
24th. Mrs. Carlton talked with the children about the importance
of saving their money. She had them draw a picture of their
neighborhood and tell if there is a bank in their neighborhood.
The students then had to use their knowledge of money to count
out coins to buy an ice cream treat. The students thoroughly
enjoyed Mrs. Carlton’s visit.
