Brief Notes
Doris Battle, Editor

Welcome to a new year

It is my pleasure to welcome all Haywood County students to the 2008-2009 school year. As interim director, I realize the great responsibility our school system has in shaping the lives of the children. We hope all students have settled into their classrooms and are looking forward to a great school year.

As you may have heard, our system made AYP during the last school year, and we are proud of the administrators, teachers and students for their hard work. This is an ongoing challenge for us all, and you should know that our administrators are ever vigilant in doing what needs to be done to continue this trend in our schools.

I have visited all the schools this year and always enjoy seeing all the children at work and at play. It’s part of our job to provide not only academic training in our schools but also lessons in good behavior, social interaction, the arts, music, and athletics. Each school is providing healthy food choices and exercise opportunities for the students to promote a healthier lifestyle and opportunities to learn through hands-on experiences in many different areas. We want our schools to be a well-rounded learning experience for all children.

So, to all the students and their families, let’s join together for another year to give our children an exceptional educational experience. It’s the most important thing we can do for them and for our community.

Day of the Iguana

Students at Haywood Elementary School, as a part of the school system’s AYP Celebration Day, were treated to a fun-filled yet educational animal show presented by the Memphis Zoo. Trainers from the zoo brought several kinds of animals to show to the students and teach them how the animals live in the wild and cope with captivity.

Haywood Elementary welcomes guests to open house

We were pleased to have Assistant Director of Schools Doris Battle present at our open house.

Mrs Katrina Hill, Haywood Elementary’s new computer teacher was busy meeting parents and answering questions about the technology opportunities the students enjoy at HES.

It was a treat to have Mrs. Robbie King present both as a school board member and attentive grandparent. She is pictured with HE Assistant Principal Carolyn Caldwell.

The cookies are always a big hit at open house!

Haywood Elementary expands reading instruction

Amanda Stanley’s first-grade students, as well as all Haywood Elementary students, will benefit from an expanded 90-minute reading class each day.

One of the factors that affect students’ success in school is nutrition, and Haywood County school cafeterias provide students with healthy nutritious food choices.

Haywood Elementary Principal Jean Wills is on a mission with her faculty and staff to improve all students’ reading skills. “We are doing everything we can to be sure that our kids are reading on their grade level,” Wills said. “We are embracing new teaching strategies that will help us reach this goal.”

According to Wills, research indicates that to be a good reader, a student must be strong in phonics, phonetic sounds, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. So she and her teachers have put into place an intervention plan to help students improve their reading skills through more reading time.
