Students benefit from health screenings

The students at Haywood High, Junior High and Sunny Hill recently went through a
health screening fair which included collecting data pertaining to height,
weight, Body Mass Index (BMI), vision, hearing and blood pressure. The data
collected is used to help send referral letters home to parents and assist the
child in their academic success, according to Haywood County School Health
Coordinator Sharon Thornton.

The health fairs are possible through a partnership of the Coordinated School
Health Program and the local Tennessee Technology Center of Brownsville. “This
is the third year of the partnership, and we are very fortunate to have them
assist,” Mrs. Thornton said. “This has become part of their yearly rotations.
The Coordinated School Health Program analyzes the data each year and trends it
to help pinpoint areas of need. Each year, some of the program’s action plans
and goals are based on this data.”
