Sales Tax Holiday set for August 4-6
In August, Tennessee will hold its first annual sales tax holiday,
giving shoppers the opportunity to purchase certain school
supplies, computers, and clothing tax-free for a specific period
of time, beginning at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, August 4, and ending
at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, August 6.
Items students and parents can purchase include selected school
items, clothing, ($100 or less per item) and computers.
School items will include: binders, backpacks, book bags,
blackboard chalk, calculators, cellophane tape, compasses,
composition books, crayons, erasers, folders, glue, paste, and
glue sticks, highlighters, index cards, index cards boxes, legal
pads, lunch boxes, markers, notebooks, paper, pencil and school
supply boxes, pencils, pencil sharpeners, pen, protractors,
rulers, scissors, and writing tablets.
School items that will be taxable include: school art supplies
such as clay and glazes, paints, paintbrushes, sketch and drawing
pads, and watercolors.
Clothing that may be purchased tax-free includes: boots, coats,
jackets, dresses, ear-muffs, gloves, mittens, gym suits, uniforms,
hats, caps, jeans, pants, neckties, belts, nightgowns, pajamas,
ponchos, raincoats, robes, school uniforms, scarves, shawls,
shirts, shoes, sneakers, hosiery, socks, and undergarments.
Clothing accessories, protective equipment, and sports and
recreational equipment are all taxable. Clothing accessories
include belt buckles sold separately, briefcases, cosmetics, hair
notions, handbags, jewelry, patches and emblems, sunglasses,
umbrellas, wallets, and watches. Sewing equipment and supplies are
also taxable, including materials such as thread, fabric, yarns,
and zippers. Sports and recreational equipment that is taxable
include: ballet and tap shoes, cleated or spike athletic shoes,
gloves (baseball, softball, golf), goggles, hand and elbow guards,
life preservers and vests, mouth guards, roller and ice skates,
shin guards, shoulder pads, ski boots, and wetsuits and fins.
Computers and some accessories, valued at $1,500 or less, may also
be purchased on the sales tax holidays, including computer CPU,
monitor, keyboard, mouse, connecting cables, notebook computers,
laptop computers, and pre-loaded software.
NOT tax-free are school computer supplies: compact disks, computer
printers, computer storage media, diskettes, handheld electronic
schedulers, personal digital assistants, and printer supplies
including paper and ink. Computer parts, such as monitors,
keyboards, speakers, and scanners are taxable when not sold in
conjunction with a CPU. Individually purchased software or other
software not part of a preloaded software package on the initial
purchase of a computer are taxable, as well as handheld electronic
schedulers, personal digital assistants, and computer printers and
supplies for printer such as paper and ink.
