Members of both the HHS Academic Decathlon and Mock Trial teams attended the meeting Tuesday night to give board members an overview of the contests they will compete in this weekend. These two teams, along with Haywood High’s basketball team, will represent the school in state competitions the weekend of March 17. The Tomcats will play Liberty Magnet School Thursday morning at 10:30 in Murfreesboro, and because of this, school will not be in session Thursday so local students and their families can attend the game. This day off was approved by the board as an amendment to this year’s calendar. The day will be made up at the end of the year when school will stay in session through noon on May 19 instead of on May 18. (NOTE: the only days that do not have to be made up, according to state rules, are staff development days and days missed because of inclement weather.)

Speaking of calendars, the board approved the 2006-07 calendar setting August 4 as the first day of the school year and May 22 as the last. The entire calendar for next year is posted on the school’s website at www.haywoodschools.com.

Board members also agreed to adopt a new grading system. This grading system sets 93-100 as an A (instead of 95-100) and 85-92 as a B. This change was based on the recommendation of the Tennessee School Boards Association in an effort to make the grading/assessment system uniform district-wide. This ensures students applying for the Lottery and other scholarships are all on a level playing field, according to Director of Schools George Chapman. The TSBA’s guidelines suggested this grading system for grades 9-12, but the local board agreed to make the change in all Haywood County Schools. This will take effect at the beginning of the next school year.

Director Chapman received a unanimous vote of confidence at the meeting when board members voted to extend his contract four more years until June 30, 2010.

In other business, Director Chapman asked board members to approve the purchase of two Type C buses for special education students. The buses the system has now will have to be replaced by next school year, so they have to be ordered now to receive them in time to be used in the new school year.

Board members also approved a request from the HHS Show Choir to travel to Hawaii during the fall semester of the next school year. According to choir director Michelle Tillman, the HHS choir has been selected to represent Tennessee in a Veteran’s Day Program at Pearl Harbor in November.

With applications in hand, the board approved recommendations for 10 mini-grants of $200 each to teachers at East Side Elementary, Haywood Junior High and Haywood High School for special projects. Recipients of these grants and their uses are:

Suzanna Martinez at HHS - a practice job interview project
Kenneth Emerson and Lois Ferrell at HHS - a model bridge-building program that will integrate engineering design with geometry lessons
Anna Roberts at East Side - literacy enrichment activities
Beth Crider at HHS- senior memory books for students in Communication for Life class
Margaret Smith/Rhonda Thompson at HHS - establish a structured school-wide academic and character recognition program
Cheryl Moses at HHS - purchase Cinco de Mayo/Map Studies project
Brooke Evans at HHS - purchase 18 TI-30X scientific calculators to ensure that every student has the tools necessary to meet the state standards for physical science and honors physical science
Jeanetta Holloway/Delois Dailey at HHS– Multicultural Fair
Becky Streeter at HJH – International Fair
Sandra Angotti at East Side – Spanish/English Library Books

To close the meeting, Director Chapman announced that Tennessee Commissioner of Education Lana Seivers would be at Haywood Elementary School Friday morning, March 17, to film a commercial. This commercial will be used in five major markets to encourage people to teach, especially in the area of special education.
