Brief Notes
Doris Battle, Editor

Welcome to a new year

It is my pleasure to welcome all Haywood County students to the 2008-2009 school year. As interim director, I realize the great responsibility our school system has in shaping the lives of the children. We hope all students have settled into their classrooms and are looking forward to a great school year.

As you may have heard, our system made AYP during the last school year, and we are proud of the administrators, teachers and students for their hard work. This is an ongoing challenge for us all, and you should know that our administrators are ever vigilant in doing what needs to be done to continue this trend in our schools.

I have visited all the schools this year and always enjoy seeing all the children at work and at play. It’s part of our job to provide not only academic training in our schools but also lessons in good behavior, social interaction, the arts, music, and athletics. Each school is providing healthy food choices and exercise opportunities for the students to promote a healthier lifestyle and opportunities to learn through hands-on experiences in many different areas. We want our schools to be a well-rounded learning experience for all children.

So, to all the students and their families, let’s join together for another year to give our children an exceptional educational experience. It’s the most important thing we can do for them and for our community.

Haywood Schools begins Coordinated School Health Program

Sharon Thornton

Haywood County Schools have initiated a new Coordinated School Health Program in line with state guidelines, according to Assistant Director of Schools Doris Battle. Sharon Thornton of Brownsville was appointed to the position in August.

Mrs. Thornton holds a bachelor of science degree from the University of Tennessee-Martin in human environmental sciences with an emphasis in dietetics and a master’s degree in nutrition science from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. She is a native of Huntingdon, Tennessee, and is married to Robert Thornton.

The state developed this program over the last few years in 10 pilot sites, and Haywood County is one of 130 systems starting the program this year. State standards for the program include:

  1. Comprehensive Health Education
  2. Health Services
  3. Nutrition Services
  4. Physical Education
  5. Healthy School Environment
  6. School Counseling, Psychological and Social Services
  7. Family and Community Involvement
  8. School-Site Health Promotion for Staff

Mrs. Thornton said she will be working with school officials, the school nutrition department, counselors, physical education teachers, the school nurse, and classroom teachers as well as families and community members to put into place the many facets of the program.

“It will take several years to fully integrate the program into the school system,” she said, “because there are so many components.” Her plans are to begin by evaluating students and communicating with administrators, teachers, and counselors before starting the program at each school.

Thornton also said she will be researching different community resources, and developing community partners for the program.

For more information about the program or to contact Mrs. Thornton, call 772-0432.
