School Board Chairman appoints committee members

School board Chairman Harold Garrett and members Robbie Jarrett-King (center)
and Pearlie Hess recently achieved new levels in Boardmanship certification. Mr.
Garrett, who has been on the board since 1989, advanced to Level 4, and Mrs.
King and Mrs. Hess, who were elected to the board in 2006, both advanced through
Level 3 and 4. This designation is offered by the Tennessee School Board
Association (TSBA) to encourage professional growth of school board members.
These certified awards are given for participation in activities outside of
local school board obligations. They will each be recognized at the annual TSBA
convention in November.
When the Haywood County School Board met in regular session on October 13,
among other business, School Board Chairman Harold Garrett made committee
appointments, and members voted on accepting the lowest bidder on several
roofing jobs.
Board Chairman Garrett appointed Pearlie Hess to join him on the Budget
Committee, and appointed Allen Currie to the TLN Committee. Mrs. Hess and Mrs.
Robbie Jarrett-King will serve on the Negotiations Committee, as well as the
Scholarship Committee. Mr. Garrett asked Daniel Thornton to serve on the
Scholarship Committee, but he declined.
During his director’s report, Superintendent Marlon King asked Mr. Currie to
also serve on the Community Athletic Advisory Committee and Mrs. King to serve
on the Community Advisory Committee.
Among the items on the agenda was the request of Superintendent King for
approval of the lowest bidder to repair the roof on Haywood Junior High, the
roof at the Central Office maintenance building and the old Carver storage
building. He also asked permission to meet with the Haywood County Commission’s
budget committee to get approval for funding for the projects. The total cost
for all three projects is $382,486. The board approved the measure with only one
dissenting vote made by Daniel Thornton.
Members also approved several out-of-state school trips for students. Among
those trips, the HHS Show Choir was approved to travel to the 2009 Heritage
Music Festival and Competition in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina in April. Twenty
FCCLA officers from the HHS Career and Technical Division received approval to
travel to Washington, D. C., in November for a cluster meeting, and a group of
HHS JROTC cadets will be allowed to travel to a Curriculum Action trip in St.
Louis, Missouri, on October 30-31.
In other business, the board approved the Textbook Adoption Committee, a
Resolution honoring school custodians, the school’s Compliance Report, the
renewal of business trip insurance, the audit of school activity and cafeteria
funds and budget amendments.
The next monthly meeting will be held on November 10 at 7 p.m.
