Brief Notes
Doris Battle, Editor

Welcome to a new year

It is my pleasure to welcome all Haywood County students to the 2008-2009 school year. As interim director, I realize the great responsibility our school system has in shaping the lives of the children. We hope all students have settled into their classrooms and are looking forward to a great school year.

As you may have heard, our system made AYP during the last school year, and we are proud of the administrators, teachers and students for their hard work. This is an ongoing challenge for us all, and you should know that our administrators are ever vigilant in doing what needs to be done to continue this trend in our schools.

I have visited all the schools this year and always enjoy seeing all the children at work and at play. It’s part of our job to provide not only academic training in our schools but also lessons in good behavior, social interaction, the arts, music, and athletics. Each school is providing healthy food choices and exercise opportunities for the students to promote a healthier lifestyle and opportunities to learn through hands-on experiences in many different areas. We want our schools to be a well-rounded learning experience for all children.

So, to all the students and their families, let’s join together for another year to give our children an exceptional educational experience. It’s the most important thing we can do for them and for our community.

2008 May Day at Sunny Hill

Sunny Hill Elementary students enjoyed their annual May Day celebration on May 2 this year. Students participated in a sock hop, bingo, wrapped the May Pole, and played on various inflatables, such as the sticky wall, obstacle course, climbing wall, and dual gladiator. In the afternoon, studentswatched as Kim Edmonds entertained them with illusions.

Sunny Hill students visit courthouse

Mr. Leigh and Mrs. Whitten’s sixth-grade students toured the Haywood County Courthouse on April 24 to obtain a better understanding of local government in Brownsville. County Mayor Franklin Smith led the tour where students visited various county offices, met local officials, saw where deeds are kept, and had the chance to sit in the jury and judge seats. Each student received a bag from the Haywood County Commission that included a purple football and a red T-shirt from the Haywood County Solid Waste Department.

Sunny Hill’s favorite event of the year – May Day!

Sunny Hill Elementary students celebrated May Day week during the week of April 28-May 2. Each day students participated in a different dress theme. Winners were chosen from each homeroom as the student “best dressed” for each theme and received a free snack coupon. Monday was “Crazy Hat Day,” Tuesday was Dress-up Day, Wednesday was Purple Day, and Thursday was Favorite Team Day. Students wore their May Day color shirts on Friday.
