Science experiment “explodes”

Science experiments help students to remember
chemical and physical changes. Ms. Humphreys/Bell and Ms.
Roberts/Holmes classes had a demonstration of a chemical change
given by Mr. Tim Roberts. With a 2 Liter Diet Coke and Mentos,
the students were shown the chemical reaction of the combination
of the two. The students concluded that the carbon dioxide and
the mint were the reason for the chemical change.
Acid or base?

Ms. Humphreys/Bell and Ms. Roberts/Holmes classes
tested several different substances to see if they were an acid
or base. Some of the items were dishwashing soap, windshield
wiper fluid, Clorox and vinegar. The students would predict what
they thought the substance would be and then it was tested. The
substance that stumped the teachers and students was the
furniture polish. The furniture polish tested to be neutral.
They had predicted it would be a base because of its slippery
texture.
Students enjoy measurement lessons with “The
Gallon Man”

Ms. Roberts’ class has been studying about
measurements. In order to remember these capacity measurements
for the TCAP test, the students created a Gallon Man. Their
creativity helped to bring the Gallon Man alive. Hopefully, the
picture in their minds of the Gallon Man will help with the
conversion of measurements.
Portable computer lab enhances math lessons

Ms. Roberts/Holmes classes have been enjoying the
portable computer lab. “We have been increasing our math skills
with educational games,” they said. The students are well aware
that in the 21st century, technology is the way to complete most
tasks. Students in both classes are learning while having fun!
SH students enjoy a “learning” East Egg Hunt

Students at Sunny Hill had a wonderful time when
they participated in an educational Easter Egg Hunt on Thursday,
April 2, on the playground. Fearsome Fifteen math multiplication
math facts and answers were hidden in Easter eggs and students
had to find the eggs and match the multiplication problem with
the answer.

The winning homerooms with the most math facts
matched earned a trip to McDonald’s. Winners of a trip to
McDonald’s were: 5th grade - Miss Mandy Bell’s homeroom, and 6th
grade - (Tie) Mrs. Deborah Kelso’s homeroom and Mrs. Linam’s
homeroom.
Sunny Hill students donate to Carl Perkins
Center

Sunny Hill National Junior Beta Club members
presented a check for $100 to Haywood County Carl Perkins Center
Director Beth Wilson when she visited the school recently. The
April fundraiser is just one of the many activities the Beta
Club is involved in throughout the school year. Students were
given sports key chains for their fund-raising efforts.

SH students to cheer for HJH basketball next

learned that they made the Haywood Junior High basketball
cheerleading squad. Congratulations to Antonesha Simon, Autumn
Bond, Aisha Shaw, Gabriella Woody, and Britannica Perkins.
