Hooper wins a bike for his essay

Ms. Bell’s fifth-grade class at Sunny Hill recently
submitted essays for a regional writing competition sponsored by
Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center Community Outreach Programs.
The students were required to write a one-page
essay explaining how they keep their hearts happy and healthy. On
November 4, Sunny Hill received news that Drake Hooper had won
first place in the regional writing competition. Drake was later
presented with a new bicycle and a certificate of achievement for
this great honor. Drake is the son of Jason and Abby Hooper of
Brownsville.
Congratulations, Drake!
Quilt teaches Civil War lessons

Pictured with the quilt and uniforms are Tietiyana Bailey,
Christian Hooser, Jaleel Turner, and Cassidy Fry.
As an opener to the Civil War unit, students in
Mrs. Phillips’ social studies classes made a quilt. Each student
was given a square, and they each drew a symbol demonstrating a
reminder of the war. The quilt was pieced together using masking
tape to create a class quilt. Once they become familiar with the
war, they made uniforms in blue for the Union and gray for the
Confederacy with letters written from soldiers to home.
The fifth graders were so excited about the Civil War study that
they brought items from home and used information from the
Internet.

Eubanks leads school in recycling project

Dannon Eubanks, sixth-grade student at Sunny Hill,
is a student on a
mission. She noticed that Sunny Hill needed to recycle their
plastic water bottles and wrote the school’s principal, Mrs.
Dorothy Bond, a letter asking that the school begin recycling
the plastic. Mrs. Bond approved the request, and Dannon began
passing out plastic bags to classrooms to collect the water
bottles.
She collected the bags on Friday. Soon, the Haywood
County Solid Waste Department placed a container for collecting
the bottles in the cafeteria.
Dannon said she wants in the future, her children to live in a
clean, nice world like she does and not in a landfill. |
