UT-Martin Steel Band performs at Sunny Hill School

The University of Tennessee-Martin Steel
Band and African Ensemble performed “Musical Celebrations of
Africa” for students at Sunny Hill School in late February. The
performance was both entertaining and educational and focused on
the cultures of Cuba, Trinidad, and Brazil. The UTM Steel Band is
an ensemble of students of Dr. Julie Hill, Director of Percussion
Studies at UT-Martin. The performance was sponsored by the
Brownsville-Haywood County Arts Council as part of its Arts in the
Schools program.
Three win DAR Essay Contest

Three Sunny Hill students, Molly McAdams, Erin
Dennis, and Sierra McClinton, were winners of the school’s
Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Essay Contest. They
each wrote essays on the Jamestown Settlement. The local David
Craig Chapter, DAR annually sponsors an essay contest in schools
to promote learning about American history.
Writing assessment practice yields winning
essays

Practice for the school’s Writing Assessment that
is part of the testing statewide for students in Tennessee
schools, yielded six winners who wrote essays from the prompt:
“Invisible for a Day.” Three students each in the fifth and sixth
grades were named winners for their work. In the fifth grade,
Donterio McIntosh, Robert Allen King, and Amanda Lopez were the
winning authors. In the sixth grade, Morgan Marlar, Elton Terry
and Ashley Porter’s essays were the best. First-place winners won
a bike, second place winners won a MP3 player, and third-place
winners received a $25 gift certificate. Money to buy the prizes
came from Distinguished Title I funds.
