Brief Notes
Doris Battle, Editor

Welcome to a new year

It is my pleasure to welcome all Haywood County students to the 2008-2009 school year. As interim director, I realize the great responsibility our school system has in shaping the lives of the children. We hope all students have settled into their classrooms and are looking forward to a great school year.

As you may have heard, our system made AYP during the last school year, and we are proud of the administrators, teachers and students for their hard work. This is an ongoing challenge for us all, and you should know that our administrators are ever vigilant in doing what needs to be done to continue this trend in our schools.

I have visited all the schools this year and always enjoy seeing all the children at work and at play. It’s part of our job to provide not only academic training in our schools but also lessons in good behavior, social interaction, the arts, music, and athletics. Each school is providing healthy food choices and exercise opportunities for the students to promote a healthier lifestyle and opportunities to learn through hands-on experiences in many different areas. We want our schools to be a well-rounded learning experience for all children.

So, to all the students and their families, let’s join together for another year to give our children an exceptional educational experience. It’s the most important thing we can do for them and for our community.

Sunny Hill students reading “Where the Red Fern Grows”

Sunny Hill students kicked off their school-wide reading initiative during the first week in September, and all eyes will be on “Where the Red Fern Grows” throughout the school year. This classic children’s novel, written by Wilson Rawls, is about a boy and his redbone coonhounds, Dan and Ann. The story has for many years fascinated students and teachers alike. “This initiative is to promote reading,” said Sunny Hill Assistant Principal Penny Boyd. The entire school will celebrate Rawls’ birthday on September 24 and classrooms will participate in a birthday card-making contest to win prizes. At the end of the school year, Ms. Boyd said, the school will hold a “Coonhound Day” and invite in several local pet coonhounds.

AYP Day Celebration

Sunny Hill administrators, teachers and staff had a fun-filled day planned for their students on AYP Day.

Parents and students enjoy Sunny Hill open house

Parents and children flooded the halls of Sunny Hill School on August 24 to attend the school’s annual open house.

Sunny Hill Principal Dorothy Bond spoke to the assembly of parents and students welcoming them to the school and telling them about rules and procedures at the school.

Sunny Hill teacher Mike Lee entertained the group when he emceed a fashion show that demonstrated the proper and improper ways to dress for school. The student in the short shorts with the cell phone was not dressed appropriately for school, while the student in the jeans, book in hand was.
