Artifacts at Sunny Hill School

Ms. Frances Pirtle’s sixth-grade social studies
class members at Sunny Hill School have been learning about
artifacts. An artifact is an object made by someone in the past.
One artifact that a student brought in was a
television set that was manufactured in June 1986 by General
Electric. The pictures are in black and white and a radio is
attached to it. People who could not afford a bigger TV often
bought portable ones like this one.
The fly sprayer was invented in the 1950’s. It was
also used for ants, mosquitoes, and flies. These were used often
in cotton fields when people used to pick cotton, and also during
pea-picking season, as well as several other times throughout the
year.
The Cast Iron Sad Iron was used back in the 16th
century and has been passed down through several generations. The
Sad Iron gets it’s name from the Old English word “Sadd” which
means heavy. This iron is made of cast iron and was heated in the
fireplace and then used to iron clothes.
Thomas Edison invented the Thomas Edison Voice
Writer in the 1920’s by. Generals would talk through them and then
it could write down what they said on a sheet of paper and be
printed out. This voice writer was used years before the
typewriter was invented.
Students learned that they were surprised by the
number of antique items that may found in an attic or storeroom.
Students earn treats for good
behavior

Sunny Hill students enjoyed a trip to and a
treat at the Brownsville McDonald’s September 20 or September 21
if they earned an “E” in conduct for the first six weeks. Pictured
are several of the well-behaved students enjoying the outing.
Sunny Hill students learning about making “Right Choices”

Sunny Hill students are focused this year on
learning about making smart choices through a federal program
called “Right Choices.” Instructors Danny Cates and Julia Cooper
talk to students about drugs, bullying, getting in with the wrong
crowd and other important issues in the abstinence education
program. The instructors have already held some classes at Haywood
High and will begin teaching classes at Haywood Junior High later
this semester. In all, they will talk to more than 1,000 students
locally about making “right choices.”
Sunny Hill students celebrate making the grade

Students at Sunny Hill School celebrate the AYP
Celebration Day with free time for playing indoors and outdoors.
