Sunny Hill May Day always a success

Dancing to the music is always a great favorite at Sunny Hill’s
May Day event, this year held on May 8. This year kids danced the
“Twist,” the “Electric Slide,” and the “Cha Cha Song.” Former
principal Carol Williams started the May Day celebration in 1989,
and every year, students look forward to the end-of-the-year
event.

BINGO – that was the magic word at Sunny Hill’s May Day Bingo
game held in the school library.

This group of “orange-shirted” students were waiting their turn
in the school gymnasium where huge inflatables were set up for the
kids to enjoy on May Day at Sunny Hill.

One of the most popular events of the day was the May Day Pole
ceremony that was held first thing Friday morning on May 8. Some
of these "green-shirted” students participated in this ritual.
Dancing around the May Pole were Rachel Morris, Houston Cozart,
Jordan Morris, Jay Clinton, Harley Baggett, Anna Reid, Amesha
Allen, Cedric Tyus, Dalton Joves and Garrison Castro. Director of
this event was Arethia Turner.
Sunny hill receives award

Sunny Hill Principal Dorothy Bond traveled to
Nashville in late April to receive the District Title I School
Award, one of only four given in the state. “We closed the
achievement gap for our students,” Mrs. Bond said.
The Title I Distinguished Schools Program awards
recognition in two categories. Sunny Hill received the state award
in the second category for schools that have significantly closed
the achievement gap between student groups in their schools.
These awards are based on performance on Tennessee Comprehensive
Assessment Program (TCAP) tests, Tennessee Value-Added Assessment
System data as well as making adequate yearly progress as required
by the No Child Left Behind act.
Students raise funds for local tornado victims

Sunny Hill students raised about $950 for local
victims of the storms that damaged or destroyed several homes in
Haywood County in April. Principal Dorothy Bond and several
students present the school’s gift to one of the storm victims.
They gave eight families $115 from the proceeds of the students’
fund-raising efforts.

The Sunny Hill Choir performed recently for the Nola Walker Bond
Scholarship Program at Oakview Baptist Church in Northwestern
Haywood County. They also participated in the opening at the Dixie
Youth Jamboree.
Sunny Hill School received a flag from the Tennessee National
Guard 1175th Transportation Unit in Brownsville. Sunny Hill staff
and students adopted the 1175th before the soldiers left for Iraq.
Recently deceased Sunny Hill School teacher Marvin Taylor sent an
e-mail to the unit each day they were serving their country. In
his honor, members of the 1175th unit donated a flag that had
flown over their barracks where they were stationed overseas.
The school also has a scholarship fund in member of Marvin Taylor,
and the governing committee has decided to award a $2,000
scholarship to a deserving Haywood High graduate this year. |
