A Carver High School graduate, Dorothy Bond earned a bachelor of science degree in sociology and secondary education from Lane College. At the University of Memphis she earned hours in elementary guidance and counseling, an elementary certification endorsement from the University of Tennessee-Martin and a master’s of education in educational leadership from Trevecca Nazerine University. She taught at Anderson Grammar School from 1973 to 1994, and at Sunny Hill School from 1995 to 1997 before being named assistant principal in 1997. She took the reins as principal of Sunny Hill in 1998. She is active in the community and in her church, and she and her husband, Joe, have a 16-year-old daughter.

Assistant Principal: Drayton Hawkins (hawkinsd@k12tn.net)Drayton Hawkins is the assistant principal at Sunny Hill Elementary School. He is a Haywood County native, was educated in Lauderdale County Schools then earned a bachelor of arts degree in English from Tennessee State University. He attended the University of Memphis for teacher certification classes, and now holds a master’s degree in educational leadership from Trevecca Nazarene University. He taught for eight years at Haywood Junior High School and served as assistant principal at Anderson Early Childhood Center for one year before coming to Sunny Hill. At HJH, he also coached volleyball, softball, and basketball. He is married to Krystal Hawkins, and they have two sons.

Janice Thomason retires at Sunny Hill

Sunny Hill Elementary School honored Ms. Janice Thomason May 22 on her retirement after 34 years of teaching in Haywood County Schools. Janice taught seventh-grade science for 12 years, then Chapter Reading and served as computer lab manager. Janice is looking forward to traveling and spending time with her family. Sunny Hill Principal Dorothy Bond presented Ms. Thomason with a plaque in appreciation of her service. Others honored at the ceremony were Mrs. Betty Harris, a long-time cafeteria worker at Sunny Hill who is retiring, Haywood County School Board Chairman Patricia Gruenewald and Director of Schools George Chapman, who are also both retiring.

 

Sunny Hill Impact classes end year with African feast

Impact classes taught by Ms. Brittany Anderson at Sunny Hill concluded their study of Africa by enjoying an African feast of rice, beans, and bananas. Students dressed in African clothing for their dining experience. During this unit, they studied various geographical areas and cultures of Africa, made brochures, and created schools. Students in the class are Brent Ward, Cassidy Hendrix, Taylor Call, Walker Thornton, Jada Brooks, Payton Jarratt, Kenston Thomas, and Ms. Brittany Anderson.
 

Sunny Hill welcomes troops home

Sunny Hill Elementary students, faculty and staff greeted the 1175th as they returned home on May 13. Students and faculty dressed in red, white, and blue to greet the soldiers of the 1175th in front of the school as they made their entrance into Brownville. The school had a wonderful display of flags, and the students waved their banners and posters. Sunny Hill has been a proud supporter of the 1175th for several years.

Fourth graders visit Sunny Hill School

Fourth-grade students from East Side Elementary School toured Sunny Hill Elementary on May 8 to meet the principals and learn about Sunny Hill before they enter in the fall of 2008. As students met in the gym and were taken on tours of the school, they were given a chance to ask questions and learn about the various classes, clubs, and rules of the school.

Students create a “Memory Box”

The students in Ms. Bell’s fifth-grade class recently completed a study of the book “The Memory Box” by Mary Bahr. In this story, a young boy and his grandparents create a special memory box during a summer visit. During the class discussion of the book, the students created their own memory boxes to share with the class. Sunny Hill hosts “Out of the Mist” puppet show

Sunny Hill Elementary students were delighted to see a puppet show named “Out of the Mist...a Dragon,” presented by the Wood & Strings Theater from Crossville, Tennessee, on May 9. Students were shown the beauty and creativity in the art of puppetry from various geographical areas of the world. The professional touring company was made up of four puppeteers. The Banraku Puppets of Japan were the hosts of the tale. Represented in the puppet show were Punch and Judy puppets representing England, Kwakiutl representing North American Indians, and Wayang Kulit shadow puppets representing Indonesia.

 

Sunny Hill Intramurals “nets” fifth- and sixth-grade winners

Fifth- and sixth-grade students at Sunny Hill Elementary had a chance to participate in their own “May Madness,” at basketball intramurals held by Coach Tim Seymour during the week of May 12-16. Winners and all-stars were chosen on the final day of the competition.

Fifth-grade winners, pictured with their teacher, Mrs. Anna Roberts, were Jalen Benton, Alandis Delk, Emmit Gooden, Kayla Shaw, Ricky Taylor, and Dustin Staggs.

From Barbara Garrett’s homeroom, the sixth-grade winners were Sedarius Delk, Devonte Briley, Devonte Douglas, Kevon Hill, Veunte Woods, and Marguese Bell.

Fifth-grade all-stars were James Davidson, Joel Bond, Summer Cunningham, Idalias Flagg, Xavier Ballard, Kyler Douglas, Jordan Varnardo, Dequavious Bateman, Jalen Benton, Emmit Gooden, Ricky Taylor, Nigel Peeples, David Johnson, and Detarion Boyd.

Former student visits Sunny Hill

Jarvis Varnardo visited Sunny Hill Elementary on May 13 to talk to a select group of boys in the Winner’s Circle Boys Club about values, such as respect and responsibility. He is a graduate of Haywood High School and is completing his sophomore year at Mississippi State, where he is a star basketball player. He has earned the distinction of being the Number 1 shot-blocker in the nation.
